To be fair, who would have ever believed people's heads would become filled with such nonsense? This is a modern phenomena that was simply not possible decades ago.
You have my sympathies, and the only thing I can suggest is to use levity and comedy to try to persuade people differently from what they have come to believe.
If they went to college, any college, you’ve lost them. Colleges do not teach how to think critically. They indoctrinate. The moment they wal into the campus, it’s nothing but liberal psycobabble. You can’t win.
Push too hard and your kids will ghost you. You will be cut off their social media sites and communication.
You probably won't be able to change that.
Imitate Jake [Kevin Costner] in the jail scene in Silverado, where Paden [Kevin Kline] is sure that the jury will see things his way, and he won't hang.
Cheerfully agree with them, while you're preparing to be prepared.
I can sympathize, as many of my local relatives are Democrats.
Here’s what I learned long ago. You cannot change a Hindu into a Buddhist. Or a liberal into a conservative. Or, etc. Any conversion must come from within. All you can do is make a single, gentle comment. If it is not well-received, let it go! The person is not ready.
And anyway, I spend time with my relatives because they’re nice people. They’re family. Any political discussion can only hurt (until they are ready to listen).
So…
My cousin: Trump was bad for America.
Me: Who do you think will win the World Series this year?
Is that surrendering? Nope. It’s picking your battles. Don’t go all-in unless your chances of winning are high. Otherwise, save your chips for another time.
Brought them up in a conservative Bible Church. Went every Sunday. But they married liberals and I lost them. I only pray they will come back to the Lord before it’s too late.
I am a middle-aged former gov't teacher that has a few ideas about life.
My mom wrote one of my sisters (An NEA teacher) out of the will.
Which particular Trump accomplishment do you object to?
Your job is to be a dad to an adult.
Support them, care, love them.
Confrontation isn’t the path.
When they spout a crazy idea, ask a question.
Goal is not to confront them directly, but raise questions about “how would that work…”
Eventually, they’ll mature, think, get mugged, etc.
10-30% will never think and believe what they read online.
You love them anyway.
Sometimes you have to avoid the third rail of politics with family. Concentrate on your love for them, good times together.
Family comes before debate.
You may find that they continue to express political opinions, taking for granted that they are on the side of the good. Ar that point you can ask them to stop, as you have done, out of respect and love for each other.
I think most people with maturity start seeing truth.
So here is what you do.... stop supporting them, kick them out of the house and wish them luck.
In what way?
I would argue. Of course my family loves to argue and has no aversion to doing so.
your values aren’t wrong, but they are not shared by your adult daughters.
Maybe give it a rest? there has to be alot of things to talk about besides politics. JMHO
The first thing you did wrong is not adding “VANITY” to the title…but we’re sympathetic listeners here and we also like to post while drinking. Let’s see what’s going on here and how we can help…
Who raised your daughters?
Thanks probably the best advice I got today. So many of my Christian friends quote the proverb “Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they won’t depart from it.” But it’s not working for them either.
Sounds like Katie Perry's parents.
There is absolutely nothing you can do to get them to be reasonable. They’re adults, let them go and get on with your life.
If you ever want to annoy someone, point out something obvious that they are trying hard to ignore.
Being offended is standard response of the younger generation. Where we would disagree or offer our view of things, they just shut everything down by saying it is offensive. It’s easier than knowing things.
18 replies before the correct response came up....
“Keep politics out of your conversation with them.”
