I guess it's still around. I worked at a filling station in the early 60s and they did a lot of brake work. I didn't realize brakes were made with asbestos.
I worked for pop's construction company and we did quite a bit of demolition. I knew there was some insulation with asbestos, but it was also in drywall and joint compound.
And it's still around. I didn't realize that. It wasn't outlawed till the late 70s/1980 and lots of buildings are still standing with asbestos building materials. Apparently, as long as it's encapsulated it's not an issue.
From my googlefoo, the latency period is 20 years to 60 years, with the average being 40 years. The demographic affect (mostly) are those who worked in the industry. Mining the material, manufacture of insulation, brakes, etc. And ~20% of those workers were adversely affected.
"Prolonged exposure" is a term researchers use.
It's sort of like sunshine in that, when baby boomers were young, we didn't even think about the potential for harm.
I had asbestos in my 1930’s Works Progress Administration era junior high school, which has been replaced.

My Dad was a heavy commercial electrician in the ‘40-’50-’60s in industrial Bridgeport, Stratford, CT areas.
Would scrape the asbestos off of beams and columns to mount electrical panels. Was also a heavy smoker all of that time.
He’d blow off the asbestos from his clothes with a blowgun.
He’s now 89, and has asthma (plus a bunch of other stuff, incl. dementia.) But no sign of cancer or mesothilioma.
Just some anecdotal info.
Many linoleum flooring products and ceiling tiles, especially in commercial environments such as offices, factories, and schools, also contained asbestos.
On the other hand, we weren’t inflicted with dozens of questionable jabs by the time we were toddlers.
All the previous lawsuits wil pale in comparison to Pfizer’s and Moderna’s damage.
It is a great material for what it was used for, but dangerous in the long term.
Looks like science could modify it in such a way as to make it harmless yet still do its job...................
Those “some” are idiots if they buy the theory that planes took down any of those buildings.
Cases numbers should be close to vanishing at this point in time. They are not, which indicates that post-1972 worker safety measures may be inadequate.
Dunno how they know, though, since he was also a heavy smoker.
Ray bolger stuffed it in his scarecrow outfit to protect him.
It was used as snow in a lot of old movies.
I think Bolger died of bladder cancer
There is a poster here who knows some people that do cancer research associated with American Cancer Society. There was a discussion about how they are really thinking genetics is key and the poster made this comment which I will probably never forget....
You can swim in asbestos and probably not get cancer unless you have the genetic quirk for it.
There are millions of $$ still left in the Asbestoes law suit pool that are unclaimed. Perhaps the McQueen estate lawyers can go get some of it. It’s free money

A friend of mine's dad died of mesothelioma / lung disease at age 70.
For years he worked in a plant that reconditioned brake pads.
And I'm sure that smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day for 50 years
had nothing to do with it.

I remember watching videos in junior high school about amazing asbestos!
I think his dad worked around asbestos as well.
His exposure was to a very identifiable type of asbestos used in insulating boiler joints and pipes.. Those people exposed to that should get checked every six months, IMHO.
That asbestos is always friable to airborne fibers and not encapsulated in any way.
Vinyl Asbestos floor tile system encapsulated in the tile material unless ground up or ground off of a floor. That type of asbestos laden material generally is less than 1% of demolition debris and therefore does not require abatement.
