"Gimme Three Steps" is a song by American southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, released from the band's debut album. It was written by bandmates Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zant.
Band member Gary Rossington based the lyrics on a real-life experience Ronnie Van Zant had at a bar in Jacksonville, Florida, having a gun pulled on him for dancing with another man's woman.

Well excuuuuuse me.
Well, that brings back memories!
One of the greatest songs, :)
Show me the back door!
One of my favorite songs. LS does it well, but heard a “cover
band” do it in Port Aransas, Texas about 30 years ago, was at a motel known for “gay” etc. people before it was a big thing, owned by 2 very hard working lesbians. The “alt” sex thing is not my deal, but it was a good night, lots of Lone Star Beer and the wife was amazed when I managed to sing the song word for word along with the band. How I got invited to that party I don’t know.
Tuesday’s Gone
Free Bird
Simple Man
Other favorites of mine from their debut album.
Since I’m from Jax originally, I was talking to a guy who knew the band from before they hit it big (they all went to Nathan Bedford Forrest high school which was one of the biggest in town). I asked him if Linda Lou was hot.
He just laughed and said “she wasn’t worth getting shot over”.
Hey fat fellow with your hair colored yellow
Whatchu trying to do?
I went to the record store the very next morning to buy an album by them. The owner of the record store had never heard of them. I told him, he better find out about them & get their record in, because they opened for The Who last night, & they were extremely well received.
I loved the backstory about their gym teacher, Leonard Skennard (or something like that) demanding that they cut their hair.
If ever a band needed a biopic or TV series, it’s Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I ain’t gonna fight over his ....
Badass Rock
There are several bars in old real Florida where just being the wrong kind of âuglyâ can get you hurt bad, if youâre not âspatially aware â, and several kickass songs from LS (Duval County) and Tom Petty/HB (Alachua County) are proof.
Old Florida back woods is the Sunshine âFeckYouUpRealBadâ State. Satsuma, St Johnâs River is my âAvoidWTFareYouDoingHereYouDontBelongâ
Spike is real. âI seen him.â
Well, no, immediately above that it is correctly stated that Ronnie Van Zandt and Allen Collins were the writers (lyricists, actually.) Which agrees with the info @ the link.
Excellent tune, regardless. ;-)
Does it ever.
Many, MANY moons ago, I did service work at various establishments including some bars. I was at one of the largest of these bars one night and who but the owner's wife grabs my hand and drags me out to the dance floor. I'm looking toward the back to see if the owner is there, don't find him, and figure if I turn her down I could be in big trouble anyway. Sort of "damned if I do and damned if I don't". So, I do, and maybe two minutes into dancing I spot her husband in back, after all. Scowling at me, or maybe her, or both of us. This guy was well known for getting drunk and waving a gun around. I'd have waved him over to take over for me, but this dude NEVER danced (at least not in public.) His wife sees this, she's buzzed but still somewhat perceptive, and mischieviously proceeds to throw some more, uh, wiggle into the dance.
"Oh, wait a minute mister, I'm NOT gonna kiss her" was about what was running through my mind... About then, a couple of the off duty barmaids decide I might need rescuing, and join us - now it's a 4-way dance and that pretty well defused things.
Later I found out that Mr. Owner actually considered me the only man he knew who he'd trust dancing with his wife... I guess he was mostly not happy with her, for embarrasing him, in his view.
Anyway, that all helped put "Gimme Three Steps" pretty high on my list of favorite Skynyrd tunes!
