The cause of death was not immediately known.
Klima was the first player to defect from then-Czechoslovakia and join the NHL, making his debut in 1985.
The Red Wings helped Klima get to the United States after he met with team brass and was in hiding with them for several days. The plan had been derived about a year and a half earlier. He wore the No. 85 throughout his career in honor of the year he defected to the States.

Longhorn basketball star Lance Blanks, who played with the Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons passed away this week at age 52. No cause of death. But there seems to be so many dying mysteriously, famous and not-so-famous.
Klima was benched for long stretches of that game because the Edmonton coach didn’t want him on the ice in overtime. He was a very talented player but was also notorious for being lackluster at best when it came to defensive responsibilities.
