Flat Earther splashes out $20K on experiment - only to end up proving Earth is ROUND

Conspiracy theorist Bob Knodel was heard admitting in a Netflix documentary with a fellow Flat Earther that he had splashed out $20,000 for the gyroscope experiment where it showed the Earth is round

A Flat Earther proved that we live on a globe after his experiment costing $20,000 went badly wrong for him.

Conspiracy theorist Bob Knodel has a YouTube channel that focuses on the wild claim that the Earth is actually flat and it is a belief that is surprisingly gathering a growing community of believers.

In an attempt to prove we live on a flat Earth he spent $20,000 on a laser gyroscope that he expected would show that the planet does not rotate.

Mr Knodel was carrying out the DIY experiment for the Netflix documentary Behind the Curve which showed the Earth indeed is round.

But using a gyroscope he found that there was a “drift” that was picked up each hour.

He said: “What we found is, when we turned on that gyroscope, we found that we were picking up a drift. A 15-degree per hour drift."

Mr Knodel accepted that this is exactly what would be expected from a rotating globe and not what he was wanting at all.

“Now, obviously we were taken aback by that, wow, that's kind of a problem," he continued. “We obviously were not willing to accept that, and so we started looking for ways to disprove it was actually registering the motion of the Earth.”

But despite making refinements of the gyroscope it continually showed that the Earth is round. He then started talking to a fellow Flat Earther at a Denver meeting where he said that they had to persist to try and prove their argument somehow and emphasised that he had spent $20,000 on the gyroscope experiment.

That's how science is supposed to work - you have a theory, them you do an experiment to prove or disprove your theory.

Yep, that was years ago I believe, and he’s dead now, by the way. Every time, however, flat earthers conduct real experiments they get their foot in their mouths.

I’m glad he proves the earth rotates.
Now, prove it doesn’t rotate like a pizza in a microwave.

You could get a gyroscope for about $3.49 when I was a kid.

Inflation.

“Now, prove it doesn’t rotate like a pizza in a microwave.”

That’s already proven by the fact that clocks keep the same time at sea level anywhere on the planet. If the earth was a spinning disc, then clocks near the center of the disc would be traveling slower than clocks near the edge, so they would not keep time at the same rate.

The Coriolis effect. It reverses itself south of the equator.

I wonder if this guy would like to bet me $20k there’s no gravity.

"A Flat Earther proved that we live on a globe..."

I'll believe it when I see it.

(If the earth was really round, we would roll right off. So there.)

Orbital velocity, apply the Virial theorem:
F(gravity) = F(centripetal)
GMm/r² = mv²/r
v²= GM/r;
Vo = √(GM/r).
For an orbital altitude of 400 km,
Vo = 17,325 mph.
Earth’s rotational velocity is 1,035 mph. For objects on Earth to fly off into space the Earth’s rotation rate would have to be >17 times faster. QED

I’m moderately curious to know if you have even the slightest clue what a LASER ring gyro is, or what it’s used for (normally), or why it costs $20,000.

Hah! I can prove that gravity is increasing. Also my belt doesn’t fit anymore. It’s probably a coincidence.

I recently knew a flat earther who was ex-Air Force.

All these years I thought they were just having fun with it, enjoying the game of being the contrarian, I didn’t know that they actually believe it.

He should move on to proving that men can be women and women men. Might even get a Nobel for it.

I saw it once (I think it was on this forum), someone stated that the Earth is DEFINITELY round- if it wasn’t, cats would’ve pushed everything off the edge by now…

It can’t be flat. If it was the cats would have knocked everything off by now.

If you’ve not seen “Behind the curve”, you should. But only for 2 things, to see these idiots in action, and to see the experiment at the end. “Interesting!” the guy says when yet ANOTHER laser experiment proves him wrong.
