Microsoft is done with major Windows 10 updates

Windows 10 22H2 will be the final version of the operating system, Microsoft said in a blog post on Thursday. Moving forward, all editions of Windows 10 will be supported with monthly security updates until October 14th, 2025, when Microsoft will end support. (Some releases on the Long-Term Servicing Channel, or LTSC, will get updates past that end of support date.)

Microsoft is encouraging users to now transition to Windows 11 because Windows 10 won’t be getting any new features.

Now that Windows 11 has been out for more than a year and a half, it’s not too surprising that the company is starting to wind things down for Windows 10, an operating system that first launched in 2015. The company took a step toward moving on when it stopped selling Windows 10 downloads in January, and now, we know when support for Windows 10 will officially end.

Ever tried Glary Utilities?

https://www.glarysoft.com/downloads/

It’s free version will analyze your system and your hard drive, especially, and will make suggestions for cleaning out unused stuff that slows the system down.

I have used it for well over 20 years.

I also use CCleaner:

https://www.ccleaner.com/

Another free version that works well, and has for 20+ YEARS.

There are also what they call ‘Professional’ versions that cost a little, and do more stuff, but I have never needed them. But if I ever go into business fixing peoples computers I would!................

When a ssd fails, kiss data goodbye. In fact, ssd’s tend to be self healing and you may never know how bad yours had become.
Pretty sure ssd’s are riddled with backdoors.

I have two computers at work.

I boot both of them immediately when I walk in the door every morning, pick up my coffee cup (or search for where I left it!) get a cup next to my office, and when I come back and sit down, maybe 30 seconds later, they are both good to go!..............

I don’t think this is a problem related to disk speed. The computer just sits there silently for a long time. I’ve used a stethoscope to listen for access arm movement, but don’t hear anything. It is either stuck trying to read a bad sector or waiting for something with a long timeout.

I’d go back to the PDP-11 given the opportunity.

So, what you have left unsaid is that if you lack the computing power to upgrade to windows 11, you are missing out on the present capabilities of computers.

That’s ok if you don’t really use a computer to exist in the Windows 11 world of Microsoft 365 and its capabilities.

The way I see it, people will stay with what’s familiar and works for them.

Unless you have software that requires the newer versions or a hardware item that is not compatible, why bother spending the money?

Used to be ‘faster’ was better. But now they are so fast that nobody needs the faster models to write Facebook posts or look at funny cat videos.

Mechanical hard drives are replaced with Solid State Drives and multi-gigabytes of memory is cheap.

Microsoft has basically painted themselves into a corner, unless they can make the OS ‘EXPIRE’ on a date certain, unless you send them a check for renewal, which is not outside the realm of possibility. See OFFICE 365.

The people will keep their old computers, upgrade them with new SSD drives, more memory, bigger monitors and tell Microsoft to bugger off...................

I dearly loved those things. The 68000 was a superset of the PDP-11. The Intel x86 is a very ugly ISA, especially when compared to those two.

I guess this will be the final straw that will get me to move all my PCs to Mint. If it weren’t for a couple of Windows programs I regularly need and use, I would have done it a while back.

My wife’s computer was taking two minutes to boot. I put an older SSD in as the C drive and startup dropped to 25 seconds. I was stunned by the improvement. I cloned the drive so the change wasn’t due to a new OS setup. The M.2 drives are much faster than the SSD drives as well. It won’t cost much to upgrade and see what happens.
