$29 ham and cheese sandwich a total rip-off — so why are NYers eating it up?

A ham and cheese sandwich at Eli Zabar’s E.A.T.  on the Upper East Side now costs $31.57 — $29 plus tax — and Gothamites are experiencing intense sticker shock over the cost of what was once a working-class staple.

It sparked outrage among eaters when a Reddit thread with a photo of the sandwich captioned “$29 Ham and Cheese sandwich” drew more than 600 comments and 2,000 upvotes on Monday.

“The first time I bought that sandwich I was like, ‘Are you serious?’ ” an Upper East Side psychologist who lives in the neighborhood told The Post, declining to give her name.

“It’s not the best ham and cheese sandwich, it’s not the worst, but it’s just fine. I absolutely would not have picked up the sandwich had I looked at the price,” she added.

The luxury lunch item is actually two sandwiches made from ham, Gruyère cheese, mustard and four slices of seven-grain “health bread.” But even then, it’s fairly small.

“The idea of a ham and cheese sandwich selling for $29 is ridiculous – even if it serves two portions; no matter how good the ingredients are or where they are from; or how tasty the sandwich is,” Phil Lempert, editor of SupermarketGuru.com, told The Post.

When The Post went to purchase the sandwich on Friday, an employee at the Madison Avenue eatery was so embarrassed by the price, they offered to charge us a mere $22.

“Some people complain, but a lot of people who live around here, they know the prices, and they don’t complain because they like it [the food].”

We persisted with the $29 sandwich purchase — and found it to be reminiscent of an airport sandwich.

For the same reason they all vote Democrat.

Add a loaf of bread and pound of cheese, and bet it’s less than the one NY deli sandwich!

I went to our local Draeger’s Market on the San Francisco Peninsula yesterday. Fried chicken in the cold case was $25/pound. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It’s always been the most expensive market around here, but that was utterly ridiculous.

The Safeway a block down has a 10 Pound bag of chicken legs on sale this week for $0.69/pound.

Zabar’s was always a stop we made when we went to the city back in the 70s. At that point it was a modestly sized deli known for great quality meats, many of which they prepared themselves. At one point they made the Guinness book for carrying the most expensive coffee in the world and the line to get in the place got kind of crazy. If you didn’t have your order ready when they called your number you were kicked to the back of the line! About 10 years ago I went back and the place was half the block and 2 stories high. The product was still good but it had lost the appeal it had when I was a kid.

Times change, I guess. Anyway, if you can get people to pay $30 for a ham sandwich then go for it, as far as I’m concerned.

It is just like wearing a mask inna car, alll alone. It is an IQ test. If you are part of the Demo base, your IQ is probably <85.
Similarly, if you live in NYC.

Nuff said.

This actually demonstrates why my wife and I can live comfortably on Social Security. It just doesn’t cost much to live when you’re old. You don’t have the same needs you did when you were young my wife makes a killer ham and cheese sandwich for a Buck or so.

But honestly we rarely eat out. It’s not worth the cost nor hassle

I’ve never heard of it, and I’m sure they’ve never heard of Barry’s Bay Ontario.

Life is good.

The town here is so small that the weekly paper headline this week, on the “if it bleeds it leads” theory, ran the headline “car takes out hydro pole”. Now that is a good headline, because three of the largest ethnic groups in the area are different shadeds of Polish—the only two headlines that would have sold more would be “car takes out Kashub” or “car takes out Torontonian” “car takes out cottager.” Car takes out Irishman would be a distant fifth.

(To appreciate the wit, one needs to understand that hydro pole is ontarioese for utility pole and being rural Ontario, everyone is involved in the water).

$29 ham sandwich buyers in NYC are similar to their counterparts in DC that are paying exorbitant prices for sandwiches……

They’re all on expense’s accounts & don’t care what anything costs in their fantasy world??

PS: this makes that cheese burger look cheap at only $14.99

“..so why are NYers eating it up?”

Because they are ignorant democrats (but I repeat myself) and enjoy being abused.

An old guy I knew used to sell quality fruits and vegetables door-to-door, using a push-cart. That was a long time ago!

Anyway, he priced his food lower than the local grocery store did. And few people would buy from him. There must be something wrong with food that cheap!

Then this guy raised his prices. Same stuff, but more expensive. And he got lots of business. So you never know.

True Swiss Gruyère cheese is super-expensive. If they are using true Gruyère, then that might explain the $29 cost.

But don’t worry, help is on the way

Considering how many palms have to be greased for the propietors to stay in business, it’s a wonder he can make a profit at all. Used to be you just had to pay Mafia street tax and you’d be good...they wanted you to stay in business. Now, the government has taken over from the mob.
