The storms in March brought down dozens of trees for crews to clean up and Caltrans is one of the agencies responding to the calls.
Caltrans said they are clearing fallen trees off state roads and are leaving the debris on designated roadsides while they respond to more clean-ups. The wood will eventually make it to a landfill, but for now, that wood is piling up.
Advertisement The wood on the roadside is attracting some residents who are taking the wood home and even though it is not against the law Caltrans advises the public against it.
“We really don't encourage people to pull off the roadway and get out of their cars and do stuff on the shoulder, especially in these wet conditions. There's still so much water out there. We're still responding to slides. We're still responding to downed trees. It's best to just focus on the roadway and driving safely at this time,” Kevin Drabinski with Caltrans District 5.
For the last few days, people have been pulling over to chop up and load up on wood at one of the Caltrans roadsides including, Monterey county Resident Cathay Rippey.
“Sad that all the trees came down but if it can you all get to good use for a lot of people then that's where it needs to go otherwise it’s just going to sit here and rot,” Rippey said.
The government would rather have it rot or take up landfill space than have private citizens benefit from a little free wood for heating.
The climate Karens are aghast cuz these people will burn it and increase CO2 polution. Stop them!
In Oregon they will lock you up and throw away the key for taking any wood out of a burn pile.
They’re idiots.
Happened to a friend years ago and he even had a wood cutting permit. He thought he was doing a good thing cleaning up the trash stuff.
That wood belongs to Gaia and burning it causes gorebull warming and people will DIE!
Why do people need wood. Just burn a tire.
If that rear axle wasn’t hitting the frame bumpers, the first good bump and that tire tested the fender.
Even the state of NJ permits people to collect wood in state owned property. Has to be dead wood and in specific areas.
Burning wood and rotting it produce about the same amount of carbon dioxide. Some is sequestered in the rot organisms, but most goes back into the atmosphere upon decomposition - not that the crazy climate cultists know or care.
Hmmm. Firewood. That’s about what I chop on a lazy afternoon.
How you gonna smoke your roadkill raccoon without wood?

Racoon sashimi or racoon tartare?
Lots of storm and ice damaged limbs down in the bar ditch - great for chipping into mulch for the garden, and making firewood of the larger stuff.
Most of those "Idiots" just go along, to get along. But I do believe our political to be enemy to be cold, cunning and wise, and their allegiances lie elsewhere..
In WA downed trees along the highway belong to the state and no savaging due to safety issues.
Let it sit so it can be fuel for the forest fires...
Spotted owl is so much better over the coals.
