DEAR ABBY: I lived in New York all my life. I moved to Florida a year ago because of my health and to be near my daughter and granddaughters. I have been depressed ever since I got here. I miss New York and my best friend very much. I can’t sleep. I sit and cry and I have no motivation to do anything. My daughter has been great to me, but when I try to talk to my husband about how I feel, he doesn’t care. He yells and walks away. I’m so confused. I feel I can’t move on. Can you give me any advice? — DISPLACED IN THE SOUTH
DEAR DISPLACED: Your reason for moving to Florida was a rational one. However, feelings are not always rational. Your move has placed you in a situation where the surroundings are unfamiliar and your support system (your best friend) is no longer there for you.
The symptoms you have described are those of a deep depression. Do not allow it to become chronic. Some sessions with a licensed mental health adviser may help you to adjust to your new circumstances so you can explore your options for more social interaction.
P.S. I wish you had asked me about the wisdom of relocating before you did it because I would have advised you to rent for a year to be sure you would be happy in Florida before making it permanent.

My wife owned a classic car with no A/C when we lived in Florida. She used to go to work at 5:30 am to avoid the morning heat.
We lived in Lakeland at the time - Lakeland is not considered a “big” city. She came home from work on a Friday afternoon after taking 45 minutes to go 4 miles in 4pm heat and said, we’re outta here. We sold our house about 6 weeks before the market went into the crapper in 2006.
Her brother and his wife both have health issues dealing with cold weather that would preclude them leaving Florida, if they desired, which they do not. They both hate Trump, and I know she hates DeSantis, presumably he does also (I quit talking to them) so I do enjoy that ha ha,
I do feel for the poor husband. But, at least the weather is better so he can at least escape and go play golf or shuffle-board.
Well, maybe they would enjoy Palm Springs, California. Desert Heat, and likely plenty of other Trump haters to cavort with.
Being good lefties, they are only generous with other people’s money. And being good cheapskate lefties, no way they are going to move to an expensive state their beloved fellow lefties have trashed.
They are the true definition of cognitive dissonance.
I had no idea Dear Abby was still around.
I enjoy where I live with 4 seasons....
NYS is a wonderful state and just like California, its owned by the big city and its election machine....most of NYS is very pretty, lots of farmland and orchards and rivers and lakes and I miss it to this day....over 40 yrs...
And this why this 5th generation Floridian left in 2019. I moved to the middle of flyover country in order to get away from the yankees.
You mean as opposed to staying in their original state and having the husband die and the wife come down with dementia there?
A different person using the name, which is owned by the syndicator.
Is DC about half-way between NYC and Florida?
I think she would like that area.
Or maybe .... Chicago? Or New Orleans?
We moved to be nearer to family. I miss my best friend terribly but I deal with it by calling her a couple times a week.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Maybe I missed it but is her best friend a male or female, and what is it she misses about this friend?
In fact we technically do not even know if the author is a she.
At a certain point, it may not make any difference. My parents had some friends that moved to Florida. The wife came down with memory problems. They had to move to assisted living with door locks. The husband died and that was the last my parents were able to contact her. Al least they had a daughter and her family living in the area.
The French Canadians are the most rude
Been that way forever. Back in the 80's I was bicycling around Quebec City with friends. One night we went to a bar for some beer. Gave the guy a $20 U.S. for a beer, he never returned with my change, so I stayed at the bar and finally yelled to him that he owed be change, he responded in French. I said I know you understand me and you had better get me change right now, he returned with my change. A*shole.
