DEAR ABBY: I lived in New York all my life. I moved to Florida a year ago because of my health and to be near my daughter and granddaughters. I have been depressed ever since I got here. I miss New York and my best friend very much. I can’t sleep. I sit and cry and I have no motivation to do anything. My daughter has been great to me, but when I try to talk to my husband about how I feel, he doesn’t care. He yells and walks away. I’m so confused. I feel I can’t move on. Can you give me any advice? — DISPLACED IN THE SOUTH
DEAR DISPLACED: Your reason for moving to Florida was a rational one. However, feelings are not always rational. Your move has placed you in a situation where the surroundings are unfamiliar and your support system (your best friend) is no longer there for you.
The symptoms you have described are those of a deep depression. Do not allow it to become chronic. Some sessions with a licensed mental health adviser may help you to adjust to your new circumstances so you can explore your options for more social interaction.
P.S. I wish you had asked me about the wisdom of relocating before you did it because I would have advised you to rent for a year to be sure you would be happy in Florida before making it permanent.

She needs to mix up a few Manhattans and get on with her life. My grandmother use to make awesome Manhattans. She put a whole jar of cherries into the mix. You had to watch out because they went down easy but they would kick your ass if you had too many.

***People like this have to be miserable.***
^^I do know people like this.^^
Me too. Family even. It makes them very, very difficult to be around.
I’m a native Floridian that moved to the Midwest for economic reasons. I learned to love the Midwest because of the four seasons. My family back in Florida thinks that the Midwestern winter is glorious though, and ask every year if they can come up to “see snow”. What they don’t understand is that winter is dreary here. Very few days are sunny, and when there isn’t snow on the ground, it’s muddy and gray. Sometimes it’s super cold, like -10 for days at a time. They romanticize it, but truthfully, they would do well to stay where they are. I don’t think they can cut the “harsh” winters here. Being a sun lover, I know I have difficulty with the lack of sunshine in the winter months. That being said, I don’t think I could ever move back to Florida anymore. It’s a nice place to visit.
“Lady and the Tramp”
Classic!
I think you’re spot on.
Suicide is painless.
When I was growing up, we called them roaches. We used to joke that roaches could be shot with bazookas and still live on.
that’s not the time to come here. Even airbnb are full now. Come in the summer (May through November, when the Canadians are gone), or you will pay through the nose. However, please understand that it is not cool and the mosquitos are in full bloom. Florida life is not for everyone from the North.
We have officially moved to Florida last year. It was nice to fill out my state tax forms this year.
Floridians, be it newcomers or old timers, take it all in stride. Palmetto bugs? Ick, even though I hate midges more, and if you venture out onto a mangrove trail you better be wearing industrial strength insect repellant. There is a botanical garden up in Vero Beach that was used for jungle warfare training in WWII.
All bodies of water contain alligators. I’ve never seen one here, actually, but I don’t dip my toes in anything other than salt water. Then I worry about sharks. They closed a local mountain bike trail because of an alligator run-in. How cool is that?
Typically I change shirts three times a day.
However, I go fishing at least three days a week; I walk my dog on the beach about the same; this area (Stuart) might be the most conservative place I’ve ever lived; my last kayak fishing trip I bagged three Jack Crevalle, two mangrove snapper, one snook and a mangrove tree with a couple of Atlantic croaker.
I grant you this: Christmas here is weirdly depressing.
Is it just me or do you find the Canadians, especially the Quebecois, more obnoxious than even New Yorkers? And whenever they do something rude they say “Eh?” and think it’ll all go away.
"Sacrebleu, where is me mama!"
The over abundance of alligators is one thing that wasn’t there when I was growing up. They were confined to a few known places, and you generally didn’t go swimming or water skiing or do water sports in those couple of places. Now they’re everywhere you go. Big turn off for me, way more than the heat, which you get used to.
Christmas time is pretty nice up here. I think that’s one thing I especially like about the Midwest. We don’t have a white Christmas every year here, but we usually get snowfall of a sort sometime in December, and the mood stays cheery even though it may be gone by Christmas Day. (However, sometimes we get more than we bargained for, like this year, when roads were very difficult and flights were cancelled.)
The bus goes both ways ... now that you have received that important information, get on it.
Good observation some people are not happy unless they are miserable they feel Biden isn’t doing enough to make things worse.
She’s gotta look on the bright side. I moved down here from Maryland in 2021. I like it here, and I also like the politics more; I’m not bringing Maryland’s Demo-Commie politics with me, like so many other folks from Bleu States do.
But I still miss Maryland sometimes. Like California, it’s a lovely state being run by absolute wretches. My family is up there, along with lots more highway construction projects than Pensacola, which appeals to roadgeeks like me.
But there’s no way I’m going back. Like I really want to pay state and local income taxes again and have my life run by gun-grabbing Demo-Commies.
Nothing worse that being in the house with your wife, next to the fire, sipping some delicious beverage and trying to figure out what to do when you have to go to bed. /s
Winter is actually at lot of fun. With the appropriate warm clothes you can enjoy the outdoors in winter.
I actually love it being warm or hot most of the year. The thing I’m not really used to is the extraordinary mugginess. Walking outside on a warm summer’s day is like having a hot, wet towel wrapped around my head. I suppose I’ll get used to that as I continue living down here, though.
I’ve seen this first hand. A couple decides to relocate to a tax free inheritance state. The husband dies and the wife comes down with dementia. Not a good look....
Man’s fault of course
Or Trump’s
