DEAR ABBY: I lived in New York all my life. I moved to Florida a year ago because of my health and to be near my daughter and granddaughters. I have been depressed ever since I got here. I miss New York and my best friend very much. I can’t sleep. I sit and cry and I have no motivation to do anything. My daughter has been great to me, but when I try to talk to my husband about how I feel, he doesn’t care. He yells and walks away. I’m so confused. I feel I can’t move on. Can you give me any advice? — DISPLACED IN THE SOUTH
DEAR DISPLACED: Your reason for moving to Florida was a rational one. However, feelings are not always rational. Your move has placed you in a situation where the surroundings are unfamiliar and your support system (your best friend) is no longer there for you.
The symptoms you have described are those of a deep depression. Do not allow it to become chronic. Some sessions with a licensed mental health adviser may help you to adjust to your new circumstances so you can explore your options for more social interaction.
P.S. I wish you had asked me about the wisdom of relocating before you did it because I would have advised you to rent for a year to be sure you would be happy in Florida before making it permanent.

Obviously a flaming lefty.
Then go back to New York.
95 goes both ways. Adios
Simple solution. She should stay with her friend in NYC from November to May and join her husband in Florida from June to October. That way she would get the best weather both places have to offer.
I think she can’t because her husband doesn’t care. He yells and walks away. She’s stuck in a place that is not home to her.
Half of New York and New Jersey live in Florida.
Try living in Cuba next.
Good advice given though…sounds like a depressed leftist.
Bingo! Perfect candidate to become a ‘Snowbird’.
She moved to be nearer to her family, but all she cares about is her old friend? The two probably just sat around bitching all day and were miserable. People like this have to be miserable. There is no cure for it. She bitched about NYC when she was there and now she bitches about not being there. This person will never be happy.
She can go back to New York and be amongst her fellow commie idiots no one is stopping her..we have something called airplanes it takes you anywhere you want to go she should try it sometimes
In fairness, maybe the husband cares more about seeing his daughter and granddaughter.
She just needs to see the shrink, which most all liberals do, anyway.
There’s no God in their equation, and they default to bad thinking, so a shrink is just their next bad decision.
The husband knows how to handle her, as she tells us.
I do know people like this.
I would’ve recommended Del Boca Vista myself!
My advice? Get over it and enjoy your new digs.
Oh hell, those leftists are always depressed because they are never satisfied and have self centered hearts. I don’t give a rats patootie about this fool.
She needs to spread her tiny wings and fly away back to New York.
Having lived in Florida for a number of years before we left 17 years ago we have many times suggested to people who want to move to Florida to first take a 2-3 week (or longer) vacation in July, rent a car and drive around central Florida or the Bay Area a lot during that period. Get a feel for the traffic you’re going to have to live with.
Many people have gone to Florida in March or October or November and thought it was wonderful. Our suggestion is always to go there in the dead of summer make sure you understand what you’re getting into.
People from up North don’t realize that the summers may seem acceptable for a couple of years, and then it dawns on them that the summers are nine months long. It just becomes exhausting, the never-ending heat. Florida doesn’t have four seasons, it has one and a half seasons.
That said, I have friends that would not leave Florida for love nor money. As a disclaimer we live in Central Kentucky and have four distinct seasons, and the winter is not that long. A very good friend and his wife left Florida and went to New Hampshire many years ago and they love it, it would drive me insane being stuck inside as much as they are.
