Seven million people could die of diseases linked to excessive salt consumption before the decade's end unless governments immediately pass tighter restrictions on salt, a report by the World Health Organization warned this month. Its authors are calling on governments to implement stricter sodium targets for food, mark salt content more clearly on packaging and boost public awareness of the health dangers posed by eating a lot of salty food.
"Excessive sodium intake is the top risk factor for an unhealthy diet, and it is responsible for 1.8 million deaths each year," said Francesco Branca, director of the WHO's Department of Nutrition for Health and Development.
Eating too much salt is one of the causes of cardiovascular disease, which kills an estimated 17.9 million people each year, according to the WHO. It can also lead to strokes, which kill 5 million people each year globally - and other serious medical conditions.

NOBODY adds 10gams of salt to their food daily.
This is ALL processed foods.
TEN GRAMS is average. Crazy.
How much salt will bugs need?
Leave people alone! Let us decide what we do and do not want to eat, drink, smoke, or otherwise use!
They’re monsters. They never stop.
Not everyone agrees that salt is truly bad for everyone.
I’d like to see a global map of where salt is killing people. Salt intake in Asia is huge. Is that where the deaths are? Or is salt really just killing people in America? Because if that’s the case, it’s not the salt.
Nobody presumes to tell you how much salt to eat.
Then go to Japan and stop it. The sodium in one cup ramen is like %150 daily intake.
It would be beneficial for people to consume less than 10 mg of salt per day.
But they make everything sound like it’s the apocalypse. Millions will die! The undead roaming the streets in search of human brains! AAAAHHHHH!!
I’m frankly bored by it all.
Meat and Salt are the two approved food groups.
You know anyone who eats 10-11 Grams per day?
I didn’t know ANYONE ate that much salt.
I stay under 2grams per day due to hypertension. And it’s EASY if you cook your own food.
From my cold briny hands!
I don’t believe a thing WHO says.
They put too much salt on the roads. That’s my gripe. Seems they have to use it up least not getting as much next year. Terrible for the car etc.
The CCP captured WHO is not worth its salt.
Is MSG a salt?
Processed food/poison, you bet. They’re lying again.
“diseases linked to excessive salt consumption”
Well, yeah, they say that, then they usually change their tune every five years or so. So excuse me if I don’t take it too seriously.
Plus, I watched my grandparents live to a ripe old age eating bland low salt food on their doctor’s orders and I think I’d rather go out a decade earlier and enjoy some flavor in the meantime.
“NOBODY adds 10gams of salt to their food daily.”
What about sailors on the high seas in the age of adventure? :P
Same old, same old.
I occasionally have to drink a glass of salt water to bring my blood pressure UP.
If I stop the keto diet, within a few weeks my blood pressure jumps back up into the high range.
Keto may not be for everyone, but it is worth considering if you have a salt problem, high blood pressure, obesity, or high cholesterol.
Carbs are sugar and sugar is a killer.
Not eating enough salt can result in memory loss and dementia like symptoms.
