NATIONAL CRAB MEAT DAY

Observed annually on March 9th, National Crab Meat Day (also National Crabmeat Day) offers a day to celebrate one of America’s favorite crustaceans. With 1.5 million tons of crab consumed every year around the world, plenty of crab meat lovers celebrate every year.

#NationalCrabMeatDay

While crab meat is a healthy choice, the fat and calories add up once you add the butter. And there are thousands of species of crabs, but only certain ones are edible. In the United States, some of the more popular and tasty ones are the blue crab, stone crab, Dungeness, king, and rock or snow crabs. They come in both hard and soft shells and can be found along all the coasts and Hawaii.

Enjoying the meat of these crustaceans can be done in many ways. Boiled crab, either the legs or the whole creature, results in a feast requiring some labor from the diner. However, every tasty morsel is well worth the effort. Mix the meat with other ingredients to create dips, cakes, or soups.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL CRAB MEAT DAY

Boil or steam some crab.

Eat some crab legs.

Make a crab salad.

Made crab cakes a few weeks ago, from my Mama’s recipe. I froze what we didn’t consume, and that’s what’s on tap for dinner tomorrow night. With homemade tarter sauce and coleslaw. Haven’t decided on whether to have potatoes or rice with it. Can’t wait!

Also, my crab bisque is pretty decent. I made that last Friday. Forgot to add Old Bay at first, and once I realized I hadn’t put it in, added it late, and it saved it. Don’t forget the Old Bay seasoning, folks! A necessary ingredient.

“It all started with a billboard that PETA decided to put up next to a family-owned seafood restaurant in Baltimore.

The “animal rights” group had apparently been using billboards to protest Jimmy’s Famous Seafood in Baltimore for a little while. The family that owners the restaurant had seemingly had enough and decided that it was going to troll the trolls.”

My mother’s side of the family is all Savannah crackers. Lived there when my dad was stationed overseas. Did a lot of crabbing on the Savannah river area as a kid. Got our shrimp fresh off the boats.

People who first try blue crabs as adults usually find the picking to be too much work. When you grow up doing it, nothing to it.

Excellent. Mordecai... refused to bow.
