A black couple has settled a lawsuit with a property appraiser who undervalued their California home by almost half a million dollars.
Paul Austin and Tenisha Tate-Austin’s four-bedroom residence in swanky Sausalito, near San Francisco, was valued at $998,000 by Janette Miller, co-owner of Miller and Perotti Real Estate Appraisers. That figure was $455,000 lower than an appraisal done for a prior mortgage refinance in 2019.
Feeling that their home was worth much more money, the Austins asked one of their white pals to pose as the owner of their residence. They had the home reappraised — and it was suddenly worth $1.48 million.
The Austins decided to sue Miller and her company claiming that her appraisal was “the direct product of racial discrimination.”
The case has now been settled out of court, with Miller agreeing to pay an undisclosed sum of money to the couple. The settlement also includes an unusual twist: The appraiser was also required to watch “Our America: Lowballed,” a documentary about their “white-washed” saga.

exactly. In my area people try to get their county tax assessments lowered.
“I’m having trouble seeing this as worth one and a half million:”
Well, then you must be ...... RACIST!!!!
:-)
I had an home owners insurance appraisal done on my house when I switched companies about twenty years ago.
He came back with a much higher value so I questioned the appraisal.
I discovered his error when I asked about the pool.
He had appraised the house next door
It’s in Sausalito
I read the article, same assessor who was also a co-owner of the company.
Incompetence.
They should “pay their fair share” on that unrealized income according to the democrats.
The whites are horrible there. They think it’s the south but it’s west coast. I am glad this couple got compensated for the outright disgusting behavior. The only unfortunate part is the racist chick didn’t get fired. Great outcome for the couple though.
Well it was suddenly worth more when they thought a white couple lived there. Do you not see the blatant problem here?
If the appraiser saw the first couple black, she lowballed the numbers. The secret appraiser was a nice white couple and gave accurate assessment. That’s the problem! If both were black or both were white, it would have been a mistake. But knowing the first couple was black, she intentionally lowered the assessment.
YOu win the internet for black history month.
Terrible. These evil people should be jailed after restitution. Put on general population.
When I was selling a house, it got into a three way bidding battle and sold for about 10% over the comps and asking price so it will drive up comps in the area.
I agree with you. This woman though gave an assessment with the black couple and then reassessed the house weeks later with a white couple. I think she forgot she assessed it in that little time or she knew what she was doing. I doubt you’d do this.
When I sold a property, the appraiser came over while I was there. All she did was a quick walkthrough, and then her appraisal was based on the selling price for similar properties in the area.
It an happen
My Dad was an appraiser in LA area in 70s and 80s. I went on hundreds of appraisals with him acting as navigator on weekends. The thing that should dominate the calculation are comparable sales.
As for never meeting the appraiser. I have met them every time I refinanced. It differs from state to state I think.
It is probably a million now. Please note my user id😀
When I first moved to the Bay Area in the early 70’s, Fremont was a complete backwater, that house couldn’t have been $20K.
Please explain to me what you are thinking?>>>>>>>>>>>>
The intimation is that the Democrat buyer would buy at any price to clean up the neighborhood, meaning that there was Dem community support for the sale even at the higher price.
Thats why I agreed with that post.
