They said they heard the sound of a locomotive getting closer to them as the leaves on the nearby trees started to blow. They then heard the sound of a train's horn - even though there are no rail lines for miles around.
Convinced what they heard was a train, the pair looked into the history of the town centre area and discovered a train line did once run at the back of the police station - but many years ago.
A spokesman for the Swadlincote Police Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "PCs Joe Stafford and Whitney Holmes-Small were getting ready to go out in the yard at the police station when they suddenly heard a loud rumble. Looking at one another, they realised the sound was getting closer and were shocked when the leaves started to blow, and the air around them moved.
"They both realised that the sound of a long-lost train passing was obvious, and were slightly bewildered to hear the pip of the horn as the noise of the locomotive rolled off into the distance."

FYI - Ghost do not exist. IF you think they do, you are uneducated and obviously gullible. Grow up!
Wait a minute.
Next you’ll be telling us that there isn’t an elf in the Mexican President’s tree.
If ghosts existed then the 100-year-old “farmer’s mansion” in which I live would be filled with them.
Take your geritol and go to bed.
There are more things in Heaven and Earth, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

He meant to say it was a UFO
I have train horns on my truck.
They are actually specially tuned. Sounds just like a train.

Supposed ghostly lights on train tracks in TN (lots of people have seen it, including a very trustworthy person I know very well who does not believe in ghosts — some say it’s swamp gas):

In both cases, looky-loos have been killed by real trains.
I’m sure it wouldn’t have surprised Tesla much, except that it didn’t happen in his lab.
someones having fun with a fancy sound system
Define “Ghost”, please.
A ghost train story! I love it!
A few years ago I was unable to sleep and at about 1:30 am I distinctly hear the sound of a train whistle but the nearest train tracks are over 7 miles away.
So I posted on FR how far away can you hear a train whistle (freaked out I had heard a ‘ghost train’) but of course FR came through for me. Seems you can hear train whistles for many miles if the atmosphere is right and it’s quiet. But the column filled quickly with all sorts of interesting posts about trains from all era’s.
I really enjoyed that :)
Btw; I have seen ghosts. They are real. I do not know what they are but it’s foolish to pretend that the phenomenon does not occur or exist. There has to be some explanation for it but whatever it is, it’s real.
Kindly state your proof that ghosts do not exist.
i was beside a lake once, stopped- window open- i heard what sounded like a train coming right at me, and turned to see a wind devil or whatever you call it, (Like a small tornado, but way smaller) swirling up the lake- and blowing the leaves as it passed -
Ghosts exists. There are 19 in Ventura and 28 in San Francisco. Be courageous and find them. Ghosts are people who are afraid of going to hell or need to pay a debt before going to heaven. A ghost train sounds cool until it is not real. The officers should go to the same place every night for a month.
Swadlincote is a former mining town in the district of South Derbyshire, England.
If you see a train this evening,
Far away against the sky,
Lie down in your wooden blanket,
Sleep, and let the train go by.
Trains have called us, every midnight,
From a thousand miles away,
Trains that pass through empty cities,
Trains that have no place to stay.
No one drives the locomotive,
No one tends the staring light,
Trains have never needed riders,
Trains belong to bitter night.
Railway stations stand deserted,
Rights-of-way lie clear and cold:
What we left them, trains inherit,
Trains go on, and we grow old.
