“A picture is worth a thousand words”—a phrase most of us have heard before. And for a reason. Photographs can capture loads of information in just a split second and immortalize it for years to come. By freezing moments, photographers enable us to travel to places and times we’ve never witnessed ourselves. They allow us to see the world exactly as it was, whether it was yesterday or a hundred years ago.
The Instagram account called Historical Pix boasts a beautiful collection of pictures from various points in time. Their uploads cover a multitude of topics, from war to technology, from sport to fashion; you name it, it’s there. As they themselves describe, “It's just history. The good, the bad, and the ugly.”
We have gathered some of the most impressive photographs shared by the account. Scroll down for the images and feel free to browse this list of historical pics or this one, if you’d like to see more.

Certain times of the year, the sun comes through Grand Central just like in that photo. Also, twice a year in NYC, the sun comes directly through the east-west street grid - something called Manhattenhenge. This occurs roughly three weeks before and then after the summer solstice.

Grand Central Terminal - great place to steal a kiss from your spouse. Dead center of the entire world.

While Hollywood makes movies about comic book characters, there are a million true stories about people infinitely more interesting and real history. I discovered Iris Chang last week.

I wonder how this one ended up.
Great site. I thought it was going to be one of those "click 50 times to see everything" deals.

Well I’ll be damned. I didn’t know that.
FYI, many in fact lots and lots of the Ancestral Pueblo buildings and dwellings scattered across the San Juan plateau also have various openings marking the solstice

Also, twice a year in NYC, the sun comes directly through the east-west street grid - something called Manhattenhenge. This occurs roughly three weeks before and then after the summer solstice. There are another two similar incidents; these take place in the winter during the "Reverse Manhattanhenge".

Because of the time of day and the time of year, these are not as popular.
