Certain times of the year, the sun comes through Grand Central just like in that photo. Also, twice a year in NYC, the sun comes directly through the east-west street grid - something called Manhattenhenge. This occurs roughly three weeks before and then after the summer solstice.

FYI, many in fact lots and lots of the Ancestral Pueblo buildings and dwellings scattered across the San Juan plateau also have various openings marking the solstice

There are another two similar incidents; these take place in the winter during the "Reverse Manhattanhenge".
