A woman from Phenix City, Alabama is facing first-degree murder charges after shooting 12-year-old Connor Mullins for playing in her yard on February 1.
According to authorities, Tywoana Anderson- Jakes, 50, found Mullins and two other children playing on the edge of her property across the street from her main residence on the evening of February 1. When the boys realized that Jakes had come outside, two of them turned and ran away, but Mullins bent down.
At that point, Jakes fired a single shot that struck the 12-year-old in the neck, killing him instantly.
Chancey said there is no indication that Connor was armed. He also said there’s no indication that Jakes and the boys knew each other, AL.com reported.
According to Russell County District Attorney Rick Chancey, Mullins and his friends were simply on the property “apparently doing mischief” when they were confronted by Jakes. “She said she shot, and I have a dead 12-year-old boy who was doing something he shouldn’t have been doing,” Chancey stated, adding that the whole situation was “hard to digest.”
“I hope we’re not in a society now where this is going to be the thing,’’ Chancey said. “I don’t want us to turn into a society where we take the law in our own hands and if somebody’s on our property, we shoot them or if we think it’s self-defense, we shoot them.”
Jakes is currently being charged with Capital Murder since the victim is under the age of 14. Authorities are also investigating an earlier incident in which Jakes is accused of shooting someone else on her property last year. Charges have not been filed in that case as of this time.
“There are still laws we have to abide by and if you’re going to have a gun, you have to know the laws and know what you can and can’t do,’’ Chancey said. “Once you pull that trigger, you can’t undo it. The stakes are bad.”
Russell County Circuit Judge Zack Collins Sr. ordered Jakes to be held without bond. A preliminary hearing is currently slated for next month.
Capital murder is Murder punishable by death..............
You don’t really need to go any further than “Tywoana”. Aaaand this is the first and last time we’ll see this story.
“compare this to the 73 yro man in Arizona who shot and killed and illegal on his property who is in jail with a million dollar bond.....lets see how “blind” justice is.........”
Your point?
“ how does one even pronounce Tywoana???”
Starts with “C” and rhymes with “bunt”
point is lets watch and see how the “justice” system works for different people...
Even if the kid was “doing mischief,” she shouldn’t have shot him.
Heartbroken for this boy and his family...
I lectured a kid once for being on my property, but only because I was afraid he’d get hurt.
Your question:
“...lets watch and see how the “justice” system works for different people..”
“...Authorities are also investigating an earlier incident in which Jakes is accused of shooting someone else on her property last year. Charges have not been filed in that case as of this time...”
THAT’S how!!
Notice how the cop slipped that attack on our right to self defense in there.
I reserve the right to be wrong, but, given that we're talking about Alabama, I don't think that's what he meant. I think he was pointing out that this clearly wasn't self-defense; therefore, she had no right to fire on him or use it as a defense when the trial comes. If he did mean it as an attack on our right to self-defense, he'll pay for it in the next election.
When I was growing up, I was lucky my neighbors were cool. Otherwise I would have been killed hundreds of times for my mischief......
I think about the “mischief” my young friends and I got up to in our neighborhood. And our ‘hood had some crazy, low-rent people in it. Lucky I’m still alive, I guess.
You ain't got the lips for it.
Oh, that’s funny. See my very next comment (30).
In FJB’s Built Back Better version of a defective America, they’ve stopped playing cowboys and indians and started playing adults and little kids.
Exactly. The author made the specific point that she was charged with CM because the victim is under 14. That implies there is some other charge for victims over 14. You can’t get a harsher sentence than CM. So what do the perps get charged with when the victim is over 14?
And making her get her fat as off the couch.
ouch...
LOL...
FIFY
This links to an article with pictures of the three kids who were playing. There’s no way in hell ANYONE would be in fear for their life from them:
