Bias and stereotypes lead to college-educated Black women facing greater challenges in the dating market.
Black women are among the highest educated female demographic in America.
Students and experts told Insider that predominantly white college campuses don't create a fair playing field for Black women when dating.
A viral TikTok of white, female college graduates showcasing their engagement rings while waiting to receive their degrees sparked a conversation online about the pressure on young women at southern colleges and universities to get engaged before graduation.
The phenomenon has many names, but is perhaps most commonly trademarked as "ring by spring" or obtaining an "MRS degree." While the terms can have a negative connotation — implying that a young woman's main intention in attending college is to find a partner – it sheds light on the very real experience of young, white women finding their life partners on campus.
It isn't comparable to the experience of college-educated Black women who are 53% less likely to marry a well-educated man (with at least some post-secondary education) than their white counterparts.
"For Black women attending college, we're really striving to level the playing field or become economically stable. Our goal is to secure a career, and in turn, secure our families," said Anjerrika Bean, the assistant director of Howard University's Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership. "Securing a spouse isn't the ultimate agenda for us. That doesn't mean we aren't interested in it, but it isn't the reason we are choosing to further our education at said institution."

Exactly what I was thinking. No joke. Makes some kind of perfect sense.
Although a black overweight woman of my acquaintance married a white man and have had 4 children so far. Both were homeschooled and continue to be religious.
“That diploma actually means very little.”
Yeah, I was wondering how many professors are gonna hard- ball and flunk a black woman.
It’s securing an eventual divorce target.
Victor Hanson talks about this all the time. When he was teaching 20 years ago, he was under a lot of pressure from the dean and colleagues to give all minorities high grades. He refused to relax his standards and buckle under. It’s gotten 10 to 100 times worse since them.
Up to the early 80’s the local law school had an annual mixer with the local nursing school. Perfect match. Nurses were the higher earners out of school and bu the time the lawyer started making money the nurse would be home with the kids.
The mixer was seen as too sexist as lawyers married lawyers. And failed abysmally.
The question any man (black or white) would have to ask themselves:
Would you rather marry a woman who got special privileges and awards because of the color or her skin...
Or one that had to work hard against the odds for everything she got...
This question probably works deep in the male subconscious—but imho it is a big deal...
When I as 15, back in the early 70's, my father ran a bus trip to The Latin Casino, in Cherry Hill, NJ for the 5th Dimension. I sat center stage, with my right elbow resting on the stage.
At the end of the show Marilyn McCoo came over and gave me a kiss on my lips. She was gorgeous. I was fell in Love right on the spot.
You were so lucky.
Roxie Roker is Lenny Kravitz's mom.
Black women should date Asian men
Do you really think a Black woman want to end up being Mrs.Ho?
I’m all blacked out, don’t care anymore.
In my day it was called an MRS degree.
A number of college grad women I know have connected with military men. They are smart and capable and want family life. But many women in college would not be open to that bc they have preconceived notions about marrying a guy with a gun but no degree (so, ignorant, dangerous, and…. Conservative.). It takes awhile to figure out that real family men do trend conservative, and that is a good thing. I should know: I am married-to-one.
“Man it” works too. ;-)
LOL
Blue birds should marry blue birds-red birds should marry red birds
Because:
A) there are far more college educated Black women than college educated Black men
and
B) women don’t want to marry a guy who makes less money than they do.
That leaves them all competing for a small pool of Black men.
