Woman returns bag of $15,000 in cash she found while walking to work

WHITE LAKE TWP., Mich. (WJBK) - For the past year Diane Gordon leaves her home for VC Fresh Marketplace where she works down Highland Road, five days a week..

"Two point seven (miles) to be exact," she said.

She knows the exact distance because for the past year, she walks that route. Her car broke down last February. She was walking home on Jan. 21, when she stopped at the BP gas station for a snack.

And before she could set foot inside, noticed something peculiar.

"I looked down on the ground and found a plastic bag with a large sum of money in it," she said. "When you turned it over there was even more money."

So she grabbed it - and knew exactly what she needed to do.

"This doesn’t belong to me, I need to call a police officer," Gordon said.

"It never really crossed her mind to do anything other than turn it over," said Lt. Matthew Ivory.

White Lake police came out to investigate.

"Inside the bag was also wedding cards, these were gifts from a wedding that occurred that day," said Ivory.

And of course, there was cash inside.

"I think it was $14,780 worth of cash," he said.

That was money Dianne could certainly put to use.

"Especially under the idea that she doesn’t have transportation," Ivory said.

Aside from freezing cold days, Diane doesn't mind the walk to work. Not having a vehicle means she's missing out on other things in her life.

"Grandkids have sporting events that she can’t drive to, jumping into the car and driving over to see them doesn’t happen," Ivory said.

"It could have made my life a whole lot easier but it’s okay, it didn’t belong to me," she said.

Police tracked down the newlyweds and returned the money.

"It was to a young couple who had just got married that day it belonged to them," Ivory said.

Then police turned their attention back to Dianne.

"One of our officer’s wives actually set up a GoFundMe," Ivory said. "(Because) the world could probably use a few more Dianes."

"I’m floored," she said. "I mean, I didn’t do anything special."

If you’d like to help get Diane a car you can find a link to that fundraiser HERE.

All she asks, is: "You find something that doesn’t belong to you, don’t keep it."

Yes, it may have said that on the box. This was probably 25 years ago. I bet that same box is still there.

With her luck, the LEO will find its drug monies in the end and confiscate it for their personal coffers.

This was once considered to be normal behavior.

Exactly. Now it makes the news.

I had a part-time job at KFC when I was a teenager. We all pretty much got part-time jobs at 16 back then, because we wanted them.

I was wiping down tables during a lull and found a wallet in one of the seats. I took it to the back and opened it to find some ID so I could call the owner. (I did not trust my manager.) The wallet was bulging with cash. I don’t know how much but there were lots of $100 bills. I found the guy’s number, called him and he rushed right over, expressing huge relief. Turns out he had just gotten a loan from the bank and was going to get a car for his wife.

He tried to give me $20, but I didn’t feel right taking it, so I waved it off.

I would be concerned about the cops pulling an asset forfeiture in which they assume that anyone with a large amount of cash must be involved in illegal activity. I would have found the owner and returned the cash myself. No need for a middleman.

Something I’ve always done too. Ive found that ppl dont seem to really appreciate getting it back like you’d expect. One in mind was $253 inside a wallet. So..ID, cards, drivers license all that. The lady owned a mexican restaurant. I asked her for one thing in return, her best posole recipe. I got a ‘Thank You’ and that was it. Ive become an old and slightly bitter man now...just because of the state of this country. I’m not sure I’d give it back now. $15K? I’ll pray about it. That pretty much means ‘No’.

I got what you meant. Other folks here have put words in your mouth that weren’t there.

That said, she should have donated it to George Costanza’s Human Fund. Money for People.

I found a wallet like that myself. Had a couple hundred dollars in it.

Found it literally in the street in front of my house.

Belonged to a HS student, I live near a HS.

I looked up the address on the kid’s Driver’s License, and went to return it about two miles away.

The Dad opened the door and I gave it to him.

He did not know his son had lost it.

He tried to give me some of the money but I refused, as I don’t need any money at all.

I thanked him and went on my way...........

I know that. My problem with what you said. Did you not read the article? What drug dealer carry’s wedding cards and other stuff in their wallets/purse?

My first thought was how lucky that couple was to have such generous friends and relatives who could afford to make the newlyweds life a little easier and how somebody is watching over them.

This is a feel good story you dirtied up with your cynical post.

In the 1980s I was driving taxi in shittsville Boston. This very nice elderly couple, took them from the nationally ranked eye doctor to the Trailways Bus station. They left a wallet in the backseat that had 150+ dollars cash in it. So I drove back and returned it.

**** They gave very nice vibes plus had given me a very nice tip in the first place.

Bless her.

I want to hear the other story though.

How did the newlywed couple mange to lose the plastic bag?

Sounds like a real privative beginning for their marriage. Fortunately, it turned out fabulously making it a positive. Hope that continues for them, and that they also see the blessing of being honest with each other. 🙂

I also hope this honest woman is rewarded handsomely. 🙂

If one feels guilty keeping the dough — give it to the right type of charity. A pro-life group.
