WHITE LAKE TWP., Mich. (WJBK) - For the past year Diane Gordon leaves her home for VC Fresh Marketplace where she works down Highland Road, five days a week..
"Two point seven (miles) to be exact," she said.
She knows the exact distance because for the past year, she walks that route. Her car broke down last February. She was walking home on Jan. 21, when she stopped at the BP gas station for a snack.
And before she could set foot inside, noticed something peculiar.
"I looked down on the ground and found a plastic bag with a large sum of money in it," she said. "When you turned it over there was even more money."
So she grabbed it - and knew exactly what she needed to do.
"This doesn’t belong to me, I need to call a police officer," Gordon said.
"It never really crossed her mind to do anything other than turn it over," said Lt. Matthew Ivory.
White Lake police came out to investigate.
"Inside the bag was also wedding cards, these were gifts from a wedding that occurred that day," said Ivory.
And of course, there was cash inside.
"I think it was $14,780 worth of cash," he said.
That was money Dianne could certainly put to use.
"Especially under the idea that she doesn’t have transportation," Ivory said.
Aside from freezing cold days, Diane doesn't mind the walk to work. Not having a vehicle means she's missing out on other things in her life.
"Grandkids have sporting events that she can’t drive to, jumping into the car and driving over to see them doesn’t happen," Ivory said.
"It could have made my life a whole lot easier but it’s okay, it didn’t belong to me," she said.
Police tracked down the newlyweds and returned the money.
"It was to a young couple who had just got married that day it belonged to them," Ivory said.
Then police turned their attention back to Dianne.
"One of our officer’s wives actually set up a GoFundMe," Ivory said. "(Because) the world could probably use a few more Dianes."
"I’m floored," she said. "I mean, I didn’t do anything special."
If you’d like to help get Diane a car you can find a link to that fundraiser HERE.
All she asks, is: "You find something that doesn’t belong to you, don’t keep it."
Great story
I hope lots of folks donate a little something to her car fund
When I was in Military Acadamy we were taught to never take anything that doesn’t belong to you. That includes finding a $1 bill in the middle of the road. Leave it.
Yep. My Dad used to say, "Does that belong to you? Then keep your hands off of it."
If I found a bag with a large amount of cash and no other information as to its contents (unlike this one with the wedding info), I would be concerned it was drug money.
This was once considered to be normal behavior.
Now it is considered to be aberrant.
John Adams was right. Our form of government is only suitable for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.
I would NOT be concerned ...............................😜
How is that your "concern?"
It doesn't belong to you. If you are of low moral character you keep it. If you are not, you attempt to reunite it with its rightful owner.
I’d be worried it would be long to Henry Hill’s bride in “Goodfellas”
I would be concerned about even touching it if it were drug money. Lighten up. Leave it to Freepers to think the worse. Geez.
So if you saw a bag of money lying on the ground you wouldn’t call the police because it might be drug money?
How does she not know — that her finding the money, wasn’t God’s plan from day one.
My son was about 10 or so when he found a $20 bill on the sidewalk in NYC when we were sight-seeing. We told him we weren’t likely find its rightful owner, and that he could keep it and spend it however he liked. Within about ten minutes we were going past St. Patrick’s Cathedral. With zero prompting from us, he went up the steps to the church and placed it in the metal box that was for collections at the front. He told us he figured they could spend it better than he would’ve.
Really? With wedding cards and the like? I don’t think I like you.
Wrong again. Damn, what a bad day to be conversing with Freepers.
That used to be called The ‘Poor Box’..................
What the F is wrong with you people. Nowhere in my comments did I say I would keep it.
That's a terrible thing to have happen at your wedding. My son got married recently and we gave them $2,000, I would have felt really bad if the money got lost and somebody grabbed and kept it for themselves.
I would be worried it might have fentanyl on it.
That too.
