Disabled residents suing Portland over scores of homeless encampments blocking city sidewalks have discovered the city spent at least $2million in taxpayer funds to buy those tents and tarps.
Plaintiffs learned that Multnomah County's Joint Office of Homeless Services (JOHS) used the millions to buy 22,000 tents and 70,000 tarps for its homeless residents, but kept basically no record of who got the supplies or where they were set up.
The lawsuit alleges the Oregon city is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act by allowing tents to build up unchecked across the city and block disabled people's abilities to safely navigate the city sidewalks.
Over the past four years the city has also spent at least $26.6million over the last four years cleaning up camps it helped fund. Representatives for Mayor Ted Wheeler defended the expenses, insisting they were mitigating the city's 'public health emergency.'
The attorney representing the plaintiffs in the case, John DiLorenzo, uncovered the tent and tarp funds in the lawsuit's discovery phase.
'The taxpayers are paying the county to put tents in place, which the city is, in turn, charging the taxpayers to sweep up,' he said, according to Fox News. 'It's sort of like trying to walk up the down escalator.'
'You provide them [with] 22,000 tents and tarps over a couple of years, we believe the likelihood is quite high that most of those tents and tarps are what ended up on the sidewalks, streets, and in the parks,' he said.
The lawsuit seeks to have the city remove all encampments - which total more than 30,000 - from across the city's sidewalks and parks.

I said before that I wondered how they afforded some of those tents. I know how much a lot of them cost and they are expensive. You are looking at $250. tents in some of these pics. Honestly one could by an old pop up camper for that money.

Yep. Probably at most 25% of the money went to tents and tarps. 2million divided by 22000 is $90 per tent. You can get a 3 man tent for $35 at Walmart.

Heck, that’s less than 91.00 dollars per “tent”. (2,000,000.00 / 22,000)
Seems like I can only get a tarp - but nothing more than that - for 91.00 in today’s inflation under Biden. No ropes, no ties, no zippers.
Tents must have been purchased using military specifications:
No shorter than 4’ 4 3/8” and no taller than 4’ 11 5/16”
At least three windows no smaller than 12 square feet (ie: 3’ x 4’) with appropriate insect netting using weather resistant, non-petroleum based material, which will prevent incursion of insects smaller than 1/16th a square inch. Said netting shall not harm or kill said insects. Window shall have a closable cover sufficient to provide privacy and be resistant to rain, snow, sunshine and winds up to 350 mph.

Filed in September, the federal class action lawsuit alleged that the city violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 by allowing tent camps and debris to obstruct sidewalks. The plaintiffs included nine people with disabilities who use wheelchairs, scooters, canes, and walkers to get around.”
