If you’ve knocked back a few and feel a warm flush creep up your face and ears, you’re not alone. While often thought of as annoying rather than dangerous, alcohol flush may be a sign of something more serious brewing beneath the surface, a new study suggests.
Roughly 8% of the global population experiences the drunken sensation, mostly in East and Southeast Asian demographics, which has been previously dubbed “Asian glow.” But it’s more than just a nuisance on a night out — the flush is caused by an inherited, genetic hiccup. Those with the gene variant ALDH2*2 are deficient in the ALDH2 enzyme, which is responsible for metabolizing alcohol.
Researchers from Stanford Medicine analyzed what exactly occurs when someone experiences alcohol flushing, making the startling discovery that it can be indicative of life-threatening ailments.

About 20% of Chinese (Including my wife) cannot metabolize alcohol. They drunk on a small amount. The rest of them seem to drink like pirates.

Had a Buddy like that. Two, three glasses of beer and he would flush. Would have to wait for his normal color to return before he started feeling normal.

Old age can do that. My grandmother was from the "cocktail hour" Era. Every evening the neighbors would gather and slam back a few martinis and such....Then would have dinner. I always enjoyed the adult company as a kid. I enjoyed the mood.
As she aged, at around 80 she couldn't drink one old fashioned without her cheeks flushing bright red. She would be fall-down drunk if she had two.

My advice is to stay outta places where warm flush creeps hang out, if you don’t want to feel ‘em up your face and ears...

New study? Seriously?
How come I already knew that years BEFORE the study was done?
There was already an in depth article on Wikipedia about it...BEFORE the study was done.
We even knew the gene responsible, BEFORE the study was done.

When I was 21, a single beer would make my neck and ears flush red and an acid stomach would follow. Roll forward to age 66, no problem. A 16 oz beer with a meal has little or no effect.
