Ok, so I live in the mountains, we barely have electricity and no other utilities of any kind, no phone,cable,...I have been using an unlimited mobile hotspot I got from Calyxinstitute.org for the last few years. It was on the Sprint network, but T Mobile bought Sprint and screwed it all up, Now it SUCKS, so I started looking for another ISP and decided to go with Starlink.(3 months ago)
I ordered it and it showed up 2 days later, I installed it over the weekend, my only real complaint is about how large the plug is from antenna to router, it required me to drill a hole 1 1/4" in diameter to fit the damned 90 degree plug. Once hooked up it took about 5 minutes for it to Self Align, loaded the App on my tablet and setup user/password for router and it was ON and UP!!
during this time I had never received any emails for confirmation, but the CC I used got jacked the day after I ordered it so the recurring bill wasn't going to go thru. I tried resetting on their site, dozens of times, sent support tickets, nothing worked never got anything, I run my own Mail Server and I never put all the records in my DNS because I never needed them, but I think they didn't like my email with no DMARC or SPF records, I finally I sent an email to SpaceX and got a reply, all they did was tell me I would get an email with a link to reset password, Never got anything but I didn't give up trying. then I went into the DNS and set all the records right, Finally when the credit card they had on file failed the second time, they sent me an email with a link top setup my account. I was able to login and fix everything.
They have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE of any kind and you can't call them if you have a problem. So don't screw anything up when you order it. However I am thoroughly impressed and pleased with the systems speed and operation, it really works Great and I would highly recommend it for others in my position. It is $110 per month and you have to buy the equipment up front for $600 also. But it is Absolutely worth every nickel, no blips, no hiccups, no Problems of any kind.
It has far exceeded my expectations.
It’s excellent.
Can you do VOIP on it?
Instead of drilling the larger hole for the 90 degree cable, you could have drilled a normal sized hole, disconnected the cable from the satellite dish (where the attachment is straight), and ran it out of your home to the dish.
Hindsight and all that.
But, I enjoy Starlink and it’s the best option I have where I am.
I need something else. Brightspeed (Apollo Management) bought out Centurylink. Lightning took out the outside control box. Took them a week to finally fix it enough to work. Come January they changed how to login (without telling anybody - customers and customer service). So we’re all caught of guard. I had to pay my bill so called billing and they took it out of my checking with my okay. (at a $3.50 transaction charge they didn’t tell me about). Now they want me to signup for autopay. I said no way. If you charge me too much, how would I ever get my money back? You can’t fix the login (after two weeks of speaking to hard to understand people), I’m not trusting you with my bank account.
Everyone I know who has Starlink wholeheartedly agrees with you. They say it’s fantastic.
You really should set up at least the SPF TXT record in your DNS. It increases the reputation of your mail server above the spammer level.
I tried it but I could not find a spot for the dish that was clear enough. The best I could do was 94% clear (tree branch occlusions) — this resulted in dropped connections every few seconds.
Canceled it.
For those curious: You need a clear 360 degree view of the sky. For me I would need a 200+ ft pole to clear the ponderosa pine trees.
I’m happy with it. Been about a year now.
Good honestreview. You have to admit your issues were atypical, but even so you recommend it.
Do you all live out west? Last time I looked Starlink was not available for the central and eastern part of the United States.
I was an early adopter of satellite radio (Sirius) in the early 2000s. Was losing the signal constantly. Under overpasses, near leafy trees, tall buildings, hills. At home, I was constantly fussing with the antenna that snaked out my window and onto the porch roof.
I can't remember the last time I lost a Sirius/XM signal. Even in tunnels I pick it up. So the technology improves.
it doesn’t come off
SoCal about 30 miles north of LA
All I had was DKIM, I put the rest in after I got email from SpaceX and a week later they finally emailed me
You screwed up on the hole. The other end of the cable which is plugged into the base of the satellite dish only requires a 3/4 inch hole. We’ve had startling for almost a year and it beats the socks off of anything else we could have got
What’s your speed test come back as?
I use to self align my hughsnet manually when I moved every 6 months.
It can be done and makes you feel like a gosh darn genius when that signal light comes on the router.
Yes. Wifi calling on my cell phone works too
