Dietary fiber intake tied to incidence of migraine
Medical Xpress / HealthDay / Frontiers in Nutrition ^ | Jan. 23, 2023 | Lori Solomon / Hao Huang et al

Increased dietary fiber intake is associated with a decreased incidence of migraine, according to a study.

Hao Huang examined the association between dietary fiber intake and the prevalence of severe headache or migraine using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999 to 2004).

The researchers found that after adjusting for covariates, there was a significant inverse association seen between dietary fiber intake and severe headache or migraine, with the lowest prevalence observed in the fifth quintile (odds ratio, 0.74). For every 10-g/day increase in dietary fiber intake, the prevalence of severe headache or migraine decreased by 11 percent. However, among Mexican Americans, other races, or those with a body mass index of 25 to 30 kg/m², no such inverse association was seen.

"To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has examined the relationship between dietary fiber and severe headache or migraine," the authors write. "Increasing the intake of fiber-rich foods might protect from severe headache or migraine."

Yeah, their “Other Races” is a pretty strange creature.

“So this only works with Han Chinese?
Interesting.”

We need a daily thread for stupid jokes so they don’t clutter up other threads.

Hao Huang and Kaiyin He, both from The First Affiliated Hospital at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China,

Reading the article is enlightening.

“Reading the article is enlightening.”

Obviously you didn’t read the WHOLE first paragraph!

“data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999 to 2004).”

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999 to 2004) they are talking about must have come from China because the one that the CDC did in the US did not have enough data arrive at the stupid conclusions that the Chi-Coms dancing puppets came to.

And the conclusion for sure come from China.

Anything out of China is either a lie or will make you sick.

Or both.

I’ve been getting ocular migraines frequently for the past 20 yrs. They usually happen when I’m dehydrated or stressed or spent too much time looking at screens. I get the scintillating scotoma (visual aura) for 20 minutes followed by a moderate headache and fatigue for the rest of the day.

I have a history of half a dozen migraines in my early 20s and then nothing for 20 years until these ocular migraines started happening. Nobody knows much about them and doctors usually say just to “sit back and enjoy the show.” Very frustrating.

I’ve had ocular migraines my whole life, but the frequency is very low, perhaps once a year on average. Never associated with a headache.

When I was 60 or so I wondered what the heck it was and looked it up.

Since then I have simply “enjoyed the show.” ;)

IMO, the biggest risk factor for severe headache is our government...

I have them too. There is no enjoying them. Its like a little half rainbow kalidoscope, little shimmering colored triangles in a half arc.

Retired and have not had them in a while, so probably a stress thing.

I get them every now and then too. The funny thing is how geometrical the aura is with its sawtooth patterns. It is distinctly triangular.

I’ve also had migraines most of my adult life. First, I get the aura in the corner of my eye, then it expands slowly till it fills up my whole field of vision and everything is blurry. Sometimes I just feel tired and sick to my stomach, other times I lose my ability to form sentences. I have my computer password taped to the screen because during one of these episodes my brain just doesn’t work. I had such an episode on New Year’s Eve Day. This time the headache was bad and lasted all day. Finally, my son took me to the ER and they told me I was having a stroke.

Funny. When I cut all the fiber out and went mostly carnivore, I never got another migraine. I still have my last 2 prescription tablets from 2016 in a cupboard. I used to get 12-15 per year and now none.
