Mis- and disinformation have been prevalent throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but in recent months anti-vax activists and conspiracy theorists have latched on to a new phrase to help their cause: “died suddenly.” Anti-vaxxers hoping to convince people that COVID vaccines are linked to sudden deaths among younger people have invoked the term while trying to exploit tragic events like the death of soccer journalist Grant Wahl, or Damar Hamlin suffering a cardiac arrest during an NFL game. Though that theory has no scientific evidence to support it, the “died suddenly” rhetoric has gained a lot of traction on social media. What makes COVID misinformation so spreadable, and how can public health officials combat the rumors?
On Friday’s episode of What Next: TBD, I spoke with Katelyn Jetelina, an epidemiologist and data scientist, about the rise of the viral dog whistle “died suddenly.” Our conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.
Lizzie O’Leary: In your latest newsletter, you had a heading that said “Deaths by Vaccination Status: It’s not even close.” What does the data show?
Katelyn Jetelina: Underlying all these rumors is the belief that COVID-19 vaccines are harmful, in an intention to possibly depopulate the planet. If that had any merit, we would expect that those who are vaccinated are more likely to die than those are unvaccinated. And we are clearly seeing the opposite. The U.K. CDC released data evaluating all deaths—car accidents, strokes, COVID-19—by vaccination status. And when you visually display that on a graph, there is a clear distinction between the unvaccinated dying (of whatever cause) much higher than the vaccinated, leading to confirm that vaccines continue to save lives.
How big a data set are we talking about?
We have more evidence than any other vaccine or any other disease in the history of

It’s not those against vax mandates that are writing the phrase in news articles time and time again. We just happen to notice the phrase as it, along with “died unexpectedly”, seem to be showing up more often than in the past. And, the phrases appear in articles announcing the death of someone of a young age and in otherwise good health.
So, news sites can blame themselves since they are the ones including it in articles.
She may die unexpectedly too.
Dizzy Miss Lizzie must not read headlines. /sarcasm

Please have a look at Dr. John Campbell's latest video January 23, 2023) on YouTube titled, ' European excess deaths, official data'
Dr. Campbell is certainly NOT an 'anti-vaxxer', whatever that may be. In this video, he quotes statistics from official UK and European data comparing 'excess deaths' for 2022 versus 2019.
Basically, all age groups are showing statistically significant increases. He points out that among Europeans aged 20-44, there is an increase of 7.8%. He states that such increases exist worldwide, or at least developed nations where stats are reasonably dependable (ie: NOT People's Republic of China).
He also questions why the world media is completely ignoring such stats. He never outright accuses anyone, as he is careful not to go against YouTube's diktats and get suspended, but his meaning is rather obvious.
“COVID-19 vaccines are harmful.” True. Proof: blood clots are recently very common in young athletes.
Duh
and this tweet.
Anecdotally, I got it Nov 2020- that was it! https://t.co/ATH9kBxHY9— Fynn-derellaMD (@Fynnderella1) January 20, 2023
I’m not saying the vaccine is great. I and my wife are unvaccinated. What I don’t believe is that every death is a vaccine death. I don’t like the near celebratory behavior of the radical anti-vaxxers, so they can be ‘right.’
Ya’ll are getting like those folks from invasion of the body snatchers. Opening you mouths in unison and pointing at anyone who won’t join in your fear. It’s quite creepy, really.
BTW anyone can create a graph or chart. The green lunatics do it all the time to prove global warming. It means nothing without concrete data.
Talking out of both sides of your mouth, troll-boi.
Go friend yourself.

A party 🥳 I will be unable to attend. I don’t respect folks that can’t debate on their own or with reason. Too bad because I have, many times, enjoyed your humor posts. Goodnight.

Right.

Until 2020, I was not an “anti-vaccer.”
However at this point, I have no trust towards any vaccine going forward as the pharma companies are planning to use mRNA platform.
Sod off, Swampy.

And, of course the smug, n00b troll plant ignores any proof provided.
Defending WEF is especially telling. Just as its sign up date is.
