How the world works (for dummies)

Poverty in America is so bad that some people can barely afford their cell phones. In much of the rest of the world, poor people starve to death, or die of what in America are ordinary, survivable diseases or injuries.

In America, injustice is so bad that many lawyers appointed by the court cannot get their clients acquitted of the crimes they committed, and must settle for a plea bargain. Elsewhere, to be accused is to be found guilty and imprisoned in hell-hole cellars, innocence being irrelevant to the courts of so-called justice.

In the U.S., police sometimes bruise a resisting felon and get fired for excessive use of force. In some parts of the world, the main difference between their police and their criminals is a badge. Those police routinely brutalize anyone who is not well-connected, where the brutality consists of committing robbery, extortion and rape—at will.

To be sure, poverty is no picnic for anyone, anywhere. Injustice at the hands of officials is injustice, plain and simple—anywhere. In the U.S., there are egregious examples of it.

Even so, as bad as America sometimes is, people by the millions are risking their lives to get here. There is a reason for that. As the tee-shirt with Einstein’s image on it says, “It’s all relative.” Hope is better than hopelessness.

As recorded in a remarkable video, Konstantin Kisin gave a brief speech during a debate held at the Oxford Union in England, in which he expostulated with the woke culture, which has become a major popular mindset of leftists in the West.

The people complaining about poverty in the USA have probably never seen real poverty or oppression.

I recall a clip from many years ago, a skinny guy in India said, I want to go to America, all of the poor people are fat.

Great article.

I lived in a toilet country for a while (my company sent me there on business).

On the bus one day, the police made a routine check for tickets.

One poor slob didn’t have a ticket.

The police manhandled him off the bus and beat the holy hell out of him. Bruises, blood, probably broken bones — the works.

Just for not having a bus ticket.

Don't be coy! You're among friends here! What country was it?

When I was teaching the Into to Econ class to freshman, most exhibited the “cake-and-eat-it-too” mentality. We were talking about poverty and the same discussion came up. I told them I could end poverty in the US overnight. At the time, poverty was defined as $9600/yr for a family of 4. (I’ve been retired a long time!) They begged me to tell them how. I told them: “You gather up all the people making $9600/yr or less and then you shoot them.” Their eyes went as big a hubcaps! After the got over the shock, I asked: “How long will it taking before the people making $9601/yr start bitching about being the poorest people in the land?” The idea was that poverty is a relative term. We went on to have a meaningful discussion about income, income distribution, and economic systems (e.g., capitalism vs socialism). It also pointed out that you have to be careful what you wish for.

The problem (of poverty) will be solved by innovation, by hard work in the development of profit-making industries—in short, by everything that the woke left hates, and seeks to destroy.

Poverty can be eliminated through the implementation of a capitalist economic system. Capitalism, which promotes private property rights and the freedom to trade, encourages individuals to produce goods and services that others value, leading to wealth creation and economic growth. Also, government intervention in the economy, such as taxes and regulations, can impede economic growth and prolong poverty. To end poverty, reducing government intervention, lowering taxes, and protecting private property rights to allow for the free market to flourish, is necessary

So many of my mom’s recipes came from a time of great poverty. She lived on the Plains of Colorado during the years of The Dust Bowl followed by The Depression. Times were very tough. Food let alone water was very scarce

The govt gave them nothing. The community figure it out

That’s the generation that fought WWII. There’s a reason we refer to them as The Greatest Generation

My godmother’s father said he would rather he and his family die before accepting government help during The Depression, and he meant it. My grandfather suddenly became big friends with the family and had them over every Sunday. My godmother ate there for the week!

I have often pondered this.
