So many of my mom’s recipes came from a time of great poverty. She lived on the Plains of Colorado during the years of The Dust Bowl followed by The Depression. Times were very tough. Food let alone water was very scarce

The govt gave them nothing. The community figure it out

That’s the generation that fought WWII. There’s a reason we refer to them as The Greatest Generation

My godmother’s father said he would rather he and his family die before accepting government help during The Depression, and he meant it. My grandfather suddenly became big friends with the family and had them over every Sunday. My godmother ate there for the week!

I have often pondered this.
