Even a Little Alcohol Can Harm Your Health, New Research Shows

new research shows Recent research makes it clear that any amount of drinking can be detrimental. Here’s why you may want to cut down on your consumption beyond dry January.

Sorry to be a buzz-kill, but that nightly glass or two of wine is not improving your health. After decades of confusing and sometimes contradictory research (too much alcohol is bad for you but a little bit is good; some types of alcohol are better for you than others; just kidding, it’s all bad), the picture is becoming clearer: Even small amounts of alcohol can have health consequences.

Research published in November revealed that between 2015 and 2019, excessive alcohol use resulted in roughly 140,000 deaths per year in the United States. About 40 per cent of those deaths had acute causes, like car crashes, poisonings and homicides. But the majority were caused by chronic conditions attributed to alcohol, such as liver disease, cancer and heart disease.

When experts talk about the dire health consequences linked to excessive alcohol use, people often assume that it’s directed at individuals who have an alcohol use disorder. But the health risks from drinking can come from moderate consumption as well.

Alcohol took the lives of 2 of my uncles. One used to drink whiskey daily. Even in his 70s he would sometimes start at 6am. His life was taken at 94.

Another uncle, every time I saw him, would have stroh’s in his hand if it was after noon. He was robbed of his future at the age of 96.

My father was a lifelong daily cigar smoker—no doubt they killed him—when he just passed away last year—at 96!

It is amazing how resilient we homo sapiens can be...

I am almost sixty-six years old, and I have always eaten and drunk what I wanted. I could stand to lose a few pounds and get some more exercise (I am working on it) but all my blood work is normal and I have never been on maintenance meds. I read here today that eating one freshwater fish is like drinking a year’s worth of water tainted by “forever chemicals.”. I have eaten my share of freshwater fish. I have drunk Lake Michigan water for the past 35 years. I have drunk my share of alcohol, too— in moderation. I am doing fine, but thanks, anyway, researchers.

Well, it’s common knowledge that one has to boil “natural” water before it can be drunken. So if you don’t want it hot (which BTW we do for many drinks), you just wait for it to cool.

As far as what is in the Bible, it is still the same truth. Water from nature as is would be contaminated, hence preceding wine.

People didn’t realize that then.

I have never gotten the impression Founders were drunks. As a huge fan of the era, I would say that’s a pretty strong impression.

I do however feel we have an alcoholic society, obsessed with drink now.
