new research shows Recent research makes it clear that any amount of drinking can be detrimental. Here’s why you may want to cut down on your consumption beyond dry January.
Sorry to be a buzz-kill, but that nightly glass or two of wine is not improving your health. After decades of confusing and sometimes contradictory research (too much alcohol is bad for you but a little bit is good; some types of alcohol are better for you than others; just kidding, it’s all bad), the picture is becoming clearer: Even small amounts of alcohol can have health consequences.
Research published in November revealed that between 2015 and 2019, excessive alcohol use resulted in roughly 140,000 deaths per year in the United States. About 40 per cent of those deaths had acute causes, like car crashes, poisonings and homicides. But the majority were caused by chronic conditions attributed to alcohol, such as liver disease, cancer and heart disease.
When experts talk about the dire health consequences linked to excessive alcohol use, people often assume that it’s directed at individuals who have an alcohol use disorder. But the health risks from drinking can come from moderate consumption as well.

She definitely was not obese.
Her attitude was amazing—always had a smile on her face and was convinced she was still in her 20s.
I learned a lot from her about how to live in the real world—it is critical to get negative people out of your life and to have gratitude for every little good thing that happens.
She was not religious and not political—wanted nothing to do with any kind of “groupthink”.
She also had the knack for telling people what they wanted to hear and then doing whatever she wanted to do as soon as they were out of sight—hilarious when you knew her tricks and watched her in action.
A little alcohol can help your health, too. Evens out.
The firemen asked them how the fire started, and one said: "How should we know? It was on fire when we got here."
These articles are written as if you’re not going to die anyway.
Well shoot, I switched to alcohol because they said soda was bad for me.
Bull Shit Jesus turned water into wine for a wedding.
She sounds like she was a hoot. It’s good to know people like that and learn from them so the knowledge gets passed on to the next generation.
Alcohol is a poison what do you think it will do?
My parents were both functioning alcoholics so I avoided following in their footsteps. I drink socially 1-2 times a month, but it’s 4-5 drinks over 8 hours which is technically “binge drinking” and supposedly unhealthy. Sigh.
Jesus did die though.
But smoking pot is a-ok!
One more tip from grandma—the two worst words in the English language that should never be spoken from one person to another....
“You should....”
That is priceless advice.
Her point—each of us needs to take full responsibility for what we do, and stop trying to tell others what they should do.
From a biological standpoint, it is classified as a poison and alcohol poisoning is a thing.
So can listening to science.
Did the article or nickcarraway bring this up?
That’s the kind of grandma I’m trying to be.
psuedo-science, medical doctors and Big Pharma can harm/kill you with ease.
