Weekly Garden Thread - January 14-20, 2023 [Back By Popular Demand: The 2023 Seed Catalog Edition!]
January 14, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 01/13/2023 5:42:47 PM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Also, if you grow indoors in winter like I do, Red Robin is the best tomato seed. I have cherry tomatoes ripening in my den from those. Many catalogs have them now.

Also have 4 kinds of lettuce, frisee, radicchio, pea shoots, etc in my den - salad heaven. I’m crazed, can’t stop just because it freezes outside!

Headed over the mountains to the Shenandoah Valley this morning for the last ‘goodbye’. Dad loved flowers, was planting tulips all over the place the week before his fall. I’d like to grow dahlias and hollyhocks this year in addition to ‘the usual’ (zinnias, tithonia & sunflowers).

I still need to order the seeds to make up the other half of the Christmas present I gave to the ‘greats’ (nieces, nephew) - I have them picked out, just haven’t been able to sit down and actually “do it” yet. It’s on the list for this coming week.

*PING* for Ellendra to Post #14 about the best white corn to grow for flour, as well as seed saving. :)

I grow Popcorn. ‘Puffy Pop’ from Jung’s is a favorite, though their ‘Japanese White Hulless’ is good, too.

Wisconsin is lousy with cheap Sweet Corn all summer long, so it’s not worth the space for us to grow it. And, raccoons LOVE it, so that draws them into the garden to destroy whatever catches their fancy. Jerks.

The only corn I’ve experimented with to grow for flour was a Blue dent corn - but again, the raccoons got most of it before it was even dry enough to grind.

I had lettuces in my unheated greenhouse until December 23rd this season - a record for me.

I just started two types of red lettuces, yesterday, to grow inside under lights. I can get green Romaine all the time, so I like to add the red leaves for color.

'Yugoslavian Red Butterhead' (Seed Savers) and one from Burpee, 'Burgundy Delight.'

LOL! A little deep for potatoes. If she fills it all in with compost, I’ll go with Asparagus. ;)

skyDancer - post #24 – well, it isn't an asparagas bed,.. right ?
Diana in Wisconsin - Popcorn. ‘Puffy Pop’ from Jung’s is a favorite, also‘Japanese White Hulless’ is good, too.

Years ago, I raised "White Cloud" popcorn and the 'pointy' hulls cut up my palms something awful.I learned about 'Corn Huskers Lotion' then, but a little bit too late.
The Amish/ Mennonite have a metal palm tool that easily harvests the popcorn - learned that too late, also.
I really appreciate your information and suggestions,
and continue to learn from them 'that's doing', and growing !

Indeed. I planted corn once and the raccoons in these densely populated city destroyed it! But this corn seed is for Guatemala where I assume they can shoot them. Even squirrels are protected here.

Diana SSEs Yugoslavian Red Butterhead is an incredibly good lettuce, one of my favorites!

I purchased from several catalogues as well as Seeds and Stuff. Because the prices were low I over-purchased tomatoes and squash from Seeds and Stuff just to have other varities on hand. (Primarily disease resistant varieties.)

They Shipped quickly and had no problem with the tomatoes I purchased. Note that their standard seed packets do not generally have a large number of seeds. (Which for my 200 sq ft garden is not a problem.)

Those are beautiful! Good luck with them. Red lettuces are my faves & I have 4 kinds growing well indoors, but they don’t get as red under grow lights as they do outdoors in Spring. Speckled Amish does great, tho, grows big fast with lots of pretty pink speckles.

Jealous! Can’t wait to see the things you’ll be growing. :)

I LOVE Kauai so much it hurts! Even though I hate flying, let alone flying over OPEN WATER for 4 hours, I could suck it up to go back to Kauai for a vacation, easily.

Thanks, Pete!

And I always have Yugo Red in the rotation. It’s GORGEOUS, easy to grow, buttery soft in the mouth, makes great wraps and it’s colorful. Who could ask for more in a lettuce?

Yes, I am Lettuce Obsessed. If that’s all I had to/needed to grow, I would be a Happy Camper. I think it’s the sexiest of the vegetables. ;)

One of my favorite lettuces for outside growing is 'Black Seeded Simpson.' The color is so SHOCKING in the garden, it mixes well with anything and can take the heat and humidity if that's the kind of summer we're having in Zone 5a. It's an Heirloom, but they have made some improvements to it through the years; 'Simpson Elite' immediately comes to mind.

It's like the 'Little Black Dress' of salads; I GOTTA have it!

I could talk about Lettuces all day and TWICE on Sunday! :)
