“Elvis’ maternal grandparents were first cousins,” Hoedel wrote of Robert Lee “Bob” Smith and Octavia “Doll” Smith, who married in 1903.
According to Hoedel’s book, the deaths were the result of Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic condition passed through generations.
“It is known from Elvis’ autopsy that he was ‘a carrier’ for this disorder,” the Michigan-based author wrote, stressing that it “can have debilitating outcomes, even as a carrier.”
Such “genetic complications” then “impacted [Elvis’] entire life,” Hoedel wrote — saying it “led to poor health, impacted brain function, compromised bodily functions and damaged organs.”
While it was written more than two years before Lisa Marie’s death this week, Hoedel noted that the King’s daughter had complained of similar ailments as her dad suffered, specifically intestinal problems that she said often left her “chronically constipated.” Elvis also suffered from bowel issues.
Elvis’ health woes may well have been why he started popping pills, Hoedel suggests, leading “to an addiction to the very thing that had helped him.”
“Often he is dismissed as just another rock ‘n’ roll drug addict,” the author said — while suggesting that instead his “fate was set on the morning he was born.”
“Elvis certainly was a victim of his own DNA,” she concluded her book, saying it left him — and other members of the family — “destined to die young.”

It was her great grand parents, Elvis’ maternal grandparents, but it doesn’t matter how far back the marriage was; Lisa Marie did have the gene which she inherited from them. The offspring from that marriage all died young from the same heart disease: Elvis’s mother, her brother, and Elvis. It doesn’t mean she didn’t also have blood clots from the vax in addition to the heart failure, and it could have exacerbated it, in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.
Marrying cousins, whether first, second and so on, was not uncommon back in the day when a person rarely traveled more than twenty miles from their hometown.
Most families have this in their genealogy.
And fried foods!!!
True Dat. She start killing herself at about age 12 or 13.
I am surprised it took this long.
May God have mercy on her Soul.
To change the subject to some extent.
Keith Richards should be cloned and his seaman impregnated to all future woman. The guy has outlived so many of his peers even though he should have died DECADES ago. He has some superman type DNA.
“...the King’s daughter had complained of similar ailments as her dad suffered, specifically intestinal problems that she said often left her “chronically constipated.”
Opioids will do that to you. And “The King” was known to be a chronic abuser.
My wife’s parents are first cousins. I have a descendent from the 1700’s who married a first cousin.
I did not see the show, but it sounds like anorexia. That will cause sudden heart failure. Thank you.
I have several very rare genetic variants that have never been seen before and were reported to the database as likely pathogenic and one reported as uncertain significance.
If I married a cousin with them my kid would be more prone to getting whacked with it than if I had kids with person who didnt have them. Since they are so rare, child would have a better chance with a non relative.
Elvis had a lot wrong with him that could have been genetic and passed on...that got exacerbated by the environment.
Science is still a long way off from understanding the genetic role in most diseases.
I am in two research studies based on my genes. So many variables that have a bearing on disease.
Brave soul! The pitchforks are being readied as we speak.
Name the ones you think she went to
Every awards event in the last 2 years.
Her skin color was yellow-ish, and that’s one of the symptoms of that disease.
We all have genetic variants.
That’s Hollywood! Use DEM up, suck’dem dry and spit DEM out!
Calling kanye, note the name of her financial planner who lost 84 million of her 100 million.
And he only charged her 700k a year for his services:-]
Yes we do. They all don’t get reported to the database as likely pathogenic. They way I know they are mine is because of who reported them and the date they were reported.
I have a frameshift variant never seen before in population frequency that has not been reported that is listed as likely pathogenic ....but I know for a fact that it is pathogenic based on my blood tests.
Gonna go with “the jab” for $500 Alex.
OK, I’ve said my piece/peace.
You want the guy who runs Keith Richards’ boat to impregnate all future women? Seems like a strange request.
The article implies that inbreeding is why Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie, were drug addicts and met early deaths - she apparently was in and out of rehab throughout her life.
I don't buy it - this is another media effort to put down Southerners as "inbred hillbillies."
Here are the "kissing cousins, from 1903.
You wrote that very well.
And it is exactly what I was thinking - her entire life, her family, has been nothing more than tabloid fodder since before she was born, was ongoing and relentless.
She married four times, each one a failure. She was addicted, like her father, to a myriad of drugs and went to rehab a number of times. She saw her father’s body after he died of drug abuse. Her oldest son committed suicide. The house where she died was described as “the house where she resided” - not as her own home.
It is almost inevitable what happened to her, what is the surprising part is that she lived as long as she did given her lifestyle and history.
