Jordan Brister, a senior at Amplus Academy in Las Vegas, was found unresponsive after suffering cardiac arrest for unexplained reasons, his family said.
A family is grieving the loss of a high school senior after he suffered cardiac arrest and was found unresponsive in the school bathroom, they say.
Jordan Brister, 18, died Sunday, Jan. 8, after suffering a cardiac arrest on Jan. 3 during the school day at Amplus Academy in Las Vegas, according to a statement by the school shared by NBC affiliate KSNV. He was found unresponsive in the school bathroom after attending gym class, his family told KSNV.
By the time he was found, there was nothing emergency personnel could do to save him, according to his family. The public charter school said in its statement that its staff provided Brister with “emergency medical attention” until paramedics arrived.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office said the exact cause of Brister’s death is still under investigation, according to KSNV.
Lacie Cowley, a friend of Brister's family who set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses, wrote that Brister "suddenly and unexpectedly suffered cardiac arrest while at school with no explanation as to why."
"Words cannot express what the Brister family is going through and there will never be enough answers as to why this has happened," she continued. "He was an amazing kid who loved life to the fullest."
Brister had plans of joining the military after graduating high school, according to Cowley.
The school also sent its condolences to Brister's family in announcing his death on Facebook on Jan. 9.
Brister's cardiac arrest happened in the same week as the death of another Las Vegas high school student. Ashari Hughes, 16, died after suffering "a medical episode" following a flag football game at Desert Oasis High School on Jan. 5, according to The Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in high-school athletes, according to Dr. Adam Kean at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Last year, Kean treated high school tennis player Drew Strasser, who suffered cardiac arrest at practice and was saved when his teammate gave him CPR and his coach ran to get an automated external defibrillator (AED) to jolt his heart.
“Even though it is the No. 1 cause, it is remarkably rare, which is important,” Kean told TODAY in October. “We estimate that one in 30,000 children die of cardiac arrest each year, and that sounds incredibly small. But that’s still around 2,000 children in the United States each year.”
While coronary artery disease is usually the culprit in causing sudden cardiac arrest in adults, in some children and teens, it may be caused by heart conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome or catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia.
The deaths of both teens also came after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, collapsed and suffered cardiac arrest on the field following a tackle in a game against the Bengals on Jan. 2. Hamlin was given CPR on the field and taken to a local Cincinnati hospital, where he stayed until his condition improved enough to be transferred to a Buffalo hospital on Jan. 9.
Hamlin's ordeal has brought renewed spotlight to the importance of learning CPR, which includes these seven steps listed by the American Red Cross.
What an ugly ugly thing to say about this young man, soon to have been graduating from high school, not to mention the slander against the entire student body and staff of a well respected charter school.

students shoot up in the bathroom. Even in my private high school more years ago than I care to admit. You think of only one reason for this death I merely suggested another. Get over it

However, what I will never tire of poking fun at and disparaging is how the CDC, FDA, and corrupt politicians worked with big tech to censor the truth that these jabs causing problems when obviously from the gigantic VAERs death spike early on they were. Thus everytime something even might be the jab I will poke the bear (even though I am one).
I would much prefer a rational reasoned analysis about the jab safety and such. But us common folk don't have access to data for us to have it. Those in charge of collecting the data are hiding that which exposes extent of the danger and they have played with data in deceptive ways to use it to deceive. Until there is honest data provided by honest originations I will display open cynicism and contempt.

I would prefer a reasoned analysis as well. But it is equally impossible when one side blames everything on the vaccine with a large degree of certainty and hysteria just as much as you feel data is falsified on the other. I have no doubt there are some side effects and some are serious. I do not believe every death in the last 2 years is caused by the vaccine. Even an attempt to have a rational discussion here earns one vile names and flaming posts often by those with the most pious and religious taglines. Until the hysteria dies down I doubt there will ever be a rational discussion
Here’s my take after living this in a way few freepers have seen for the last several years Although not as effective as we would have liked the vaccine did save lives in the at risk population with the alpha and delta strains of covid. At no time do I think it was indicated for those under 30 unless they were especially vulnerable. Currently the disease has attenuated to the point I think any vaccination is probably not indicated although those in the highest risk groups may wish to get boosted on an individual basis.
I am against and always have been against mandates of both vaccines and masks and think the lockdowns were counterproductive. While folks wish to chase the wild claims on the vaccine I think the true tragedy is what was done to the very elderly and the very young with the lockdowns. I think society will be paying the price for years in kids left behind in the education and mentally scarred by isolation and forced mask wearing, and locking the elderly away from their families and support systems was criminal. That’s my take on it - flame away

The article says there are 2,000 of these deaths among young people each year. The cause are genetic defects in the heart muscles.
