Louisiana’s Krewe of Endymion rescinded its offer to have Mel Gibson be the co-grand marshal of its 2023 Mardi Gras parade.
Endymion President Dan Kelly announced Sunday that the organization's invitation to Gibson, whose past well-publicized antisemitic remarks and other scandals have plagued his career, had sparked threats that were of "great concern."
"The Krewe of Endymion has received significant feedback about our grand marshal announcement yesterday evening," Kelly wrote, according to NOLA.com. "Some of this commentary included threats that cause us great concern."
Kelly added that it was "in the best interest of the safety of our riders, special guests, and everyone that welcomes us on the streets" that Gibson not ride as a co-grand marshal for Endymion, which is one of the largest, most well-known parades to roll through New Orleans during Mardi Gras weekend.
The controversy began Saturday when Endymion announced on social media that Gibson would lead the Feb. 18 parade alongside Tulane University head football coach Willie Fritz.
By Sunday, however, the post announcing Gibson's participation had been deleted and hours later the statement was released explaining the withdrawal of Gibson's invitation.
The decision did little to appease various Jewish organizations which questioned why Gibson had been invited in the first place. In a joint statement, the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, the Greater New Orleans Rabbinic Council and the Anti-Defamation League slammed the move as "completely insulting and shortsighted."
"There is still a great deal of pain associated with his name and deep wounds in the Jewish community," said Lindsay Baach Friedmann, the ADL's regional director.

New Orleans truly is a dark place.
They like to joke about voodoo down there but it’s not funny.
New Orleans and Haiti are both constantly daring God to smite them.
Gibson is a Christian I Assume. I have never heard of any Jew hate speech or actions from him. Am I to disconnected from this?
Cancel culture on the move.
Yup. Them's the rules. Ask "Ye."
Most dangerous cities: 17. New Orleans, Louisiana
The year 2021 ended with New Orleans on the spot after recording 218 murder cases, according to the police department.
During this year, the number of carjackings and shootings also increased. Seven police officers in New Orleans were involved in shootings.
The chances of a violent personal crime in New Orleans now stand at 1 out of 74. In comparison, the chances of experiencing a property crime are 1 out of 21.
The city also recorded 23,319 crime cases, with 18,098 being property and 5,221 being violent crimes. The crime rate in the city stands at 60.73 for every 1000 residents.
And from actually clicking on the story and reading it I am sure of it as this is the Jews bitching because Mel is a Christian and doing Christian stuff. The real Jews need rein this crap in. (HA!)
They will invite Louis Farrakhan instead
OH that's a cut to the bone.
LOL. I didn’t know “Hollywood” controlled FR too.
What sequel?
Mel is more talented than the people who attacked him.
I grew up in Big B.R. I have spent many, many nights in New Orleans since the 1970s.
The music, the food, and the joyous insouciance were so delightful, unparalleled compared to any other of the many cities I’ve experienced.
It was a perfect place to be with a young love. I know this first hand.
But over time the dysfunction, the crime, and the corruption became ever more wearing.
Everyone there seems to feel ever more put upon and under siege. N.O. always had an edge but that’s become much sharper.
Katrina was a watershed event. Many working and lower-middle class people left and the inflow of charming bohemians tapered off.
It became more difficult, more expensive, and the amount of super cheap but really fun stuff dwindled.
And the crime has exploded and become preposterously vicious.
I’m afraid the New Orleans I loved is gone forever.
That is an accurate description of cancel culture.
The Resurrection of Yeshua; filming was halted during the scam-demic and had just now started up again.
I bet they would invite Ilhan Omar.
I love Braveheart, the passion and hacksaw ridge as a fan of Mel Gibson.
Probably correct but after The Passion the star had to have heart surgery. While on the cross he was close enough to a lightning strike that it got him. While tied to the pillary one of the the prongs attached to the whip caught him across his back. As the said after, you do not make a film about the Passion without getting some given to you.
I would strongly suggest to you, regarding "The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection", that:
The Good News: Mel's LW5 and LW6 earnings might very well possibly pay for Mel to 'own' "Resurrection" outright, and thus start it after LW6 wraps, with an eye on "Resurrection" release in 2025. Caviezel has a timeless face BUT he already needs to lose some weight, he's a fatty.
“They’re still pissed about his Jesus movie.”
Heck, the media blasted that movie all during its pre-production, production, and post production thereby giving it so much free advertising everybody just had to see what all the fuss was about... thank you Dan Rather, IIRC you were leading the charge.
I saw the first two Road Warrior movies and actually visited the sites where they were filmed, I never liked the sequels to them. The movie The Passion was deeply moving and I’m looking forward to the Resurrection one.
“It’s actually a pretty cool town with great history and restaurants if you just avoid Bourbon Street like the plague. That’s what I do.”
The Rock & Bowl...
Best dang bowling alley in the whole dang country! Cajun chow, live music and dancing. With bowling lanes to boot! I recommend bringing your bowling bag with.
