Louisiana’s Krewe of Endymion rescinded its offer to have Mel Gibson be the co-grand marshal of its 2023 Mardi Gras parade.
Endymion President Dan Kelly announced Sunday that the organization's invitation to Gibson, whose past well-publicized antisemitic remarks and other scandals have plagued his career, had sparked threats that were of "great concern."
"The Krewe of Endymion has received significant feedback about our grand marshal announcement yesterday evening," Kelly wrote, according to NOLA.com. "Some of this commentary included threats that cause us great concern."
Kelly added that it was "in the best interest of the safety of our riders, special guests, and everyone that welcomes us on the streets" that Gibson not ride as a co-grand marshal for Endymion, which is one of the largest, most well-known parades to roll through New Orleans during Mardi Gras weekend.
The controversy began Saturday when Endymion announced on social media that Gibson would lead the Feb. 18 parade alongside Tulane University head football coach Willie Fritz.
By Sunday, however, the post announcing Gibson's participation had been deleted and hours later the statement was released explaining the withdrawal of Gibson's invitation.
The decision did little to appease various Jewish organizations which questioned why Gibson had been invited in the first place. In a joint statement, the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, the Greater New Orleans Rabbinic Council and the Anti-Defamation League slammed the move as "completely insulting and shortsighted."
"There is still a great deal of pain associated with his name and deep wounds in the Jewish community," said Lindsay Baach Friedmann, the ADL's regional director.

I met him right after he had come back from the jungle. He said it was the sickest he's ever been.
When the film came out I put two and two together and realized he had been filming Apocolypto.

I’ve been there.................
One of the best actors evah!
Ever notice that all the Left likes to do is make other people miserable, ban stuff and make people do things they don’t want to do?.................
My son and his wife live in the French Quarter. Once was enough for me. It is a dark place.
Obviously smart enough to not publicize it.
My most recent visit to a movie theater. I actually watched the whole thing without walking out because of snarky political correctness.
.
I went in the 80’s.
smells like an outhouse that has passed it’s “Best by” date and a vomitorium.
Don’t care to ever go back...
What, he’s legally required to love Jewish folks?
It’s some kind of crime to be even slightly critical of them?
Some global law that everyone must love them?
Wow, must be nice.
I’ma convert right away. I’m Jewish now.
All y’all better love me or you can go to jail.
Shalom, haters.
He is too Catholic for New Orleans.
Your description is accurate….about perhaps a four block area. I went there for work every year for a while. But then when my wife and I go, we get out of the quarter and explored some other areas.
Some of the best meals I’ve eaten were in New Orleans.
But…you have to be careful where you find yourself when the sun sets.
Jews didn’t have a problem with Mel Gibson until that Passion of the Christ movie.
I don’t blame you. New Orleans has really gone downhill since Katrina since the police have been decimated. It is generally not a safe place to visit especially if one is a tourist.
As one who used to live there I can say there are some great places to go that are off the beaten path but again you have to know where they are. I occasionally visit there now but not often.
According to about a dozen or so posters here, anything remotely critical means you’re a Nazi, or go back to Stormfront…
Meanwhile, those same people trash, and dehumanize, Muslims all day long.
I grew up not too far from there and have spent a lot of time in it. It does have a lot of great history and the food is fantastic. However, the whole city is a festering chithole, not just Bourbon Street. Bourbon Street itself is actually one of the safer areas, now get two blocks off of it and it's a different story. I still enjoy visiting it in a morbid curiosity kind of way like how you can't take your eyes off a train wreck. Don't let your guard down there however.
The smell of the French Quarter really was a surprise. To me, it was a mix of molding wood and urine.
There is something in that, actually. The troop is only interested in what territory and food they can take from someone else, and if a noisly leader can get the other side to back down it's fine. If the other side takes him out, well no loss. He was unpleasant to live with anyway.
If you want to know who controls you just buy Mel Gibson a couple of drinks.
