You only need half of that. I’ll take the other three.

I recently had someone who tried four times to give me the correct change before her manager stepped in.

I remember a financial article that mentioned the insidious math that caused an investor to lose money when the market went up 10% and then down 10%.

No. You forgot to line the numbers up. It’s a common mistake.

250
25
___

500
👍

Full disclosure: I learned math from Dr. Jill Biden. She’s one smart cookie.

Math Magic Trick #4

Think of a 2 digit number, this is your Original #.
Add the digits
Subtract from your Original #.
Look up this number on the chart and think of the symbol.

The symbol you see is a square

Th3 symbol will always be a square

I can tell you all how people believe that 550 / 2 = 225. 🙂

They look at 550 and they say 50 /2 = 25
5 / 2 = 2
and then they totally forget that the remainder is 1, LOL.

That’s surprising. I would have expected at least 80% to get that right.

“Back when I was interviewing prospective employees (all college grads), one of my questions was always “Can you please express the fraction 4/5 as a percentage?” Only about half could do so. Some were truly puzzled, and had no idea what I was asking. Pass.”

+++++

I’m assuming fractions and percentages are no longer taught in about 4th or 5th grade? The more I learn about what they AREN’T teaching in schools these days, while at the same time learning what they ARE teaching, the more I’m convinced the Dept of Education needs to be disbanded and school control returned to the local community. Just by-pass State control as well and let each county locally decide the curriculum for their school.

Yep, 225 popped into my head for a second and then I got 275 a second later.

When we homeschooled the kids, they didn't get calculators. They learned long division too. Never could get my daughter to memorize multiplication tables though and I only asked for up to 10 x 10. I know them up to 12 x 12 because I'm blue collar and use inches/feet and knowing how many inches are in 1 - 12 feet is handy. I also know my decimal equivalents by heart down to the 16th of an inch and can figure out/remember the 32nds from there.

Daughter always kept one of these handy.

I had her make the table but with 0 in the bottom left corner, AutoCAD style. Tried flash cards and was hoping having her make and reference the table would help her remember but she refused. It was a rebellious thing. Because she knew I wanted her to learn it, she refused. Didn't matter if it was for her own good.

There is no such thing as half of 550 because 2 does not divide into 5 evenly.
