Weekly Garden Thread - December 31-January 6, 2023 [2022 Lessons Learned Edition]
December 31, 2022 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 12/31/2022 4:40:05 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I think the brassicas loved the mid 30 degree temps. Bucha weirdos.

I like all brassica vegetables.
Especially lightly steamed brussels sprouts with butter,
or floating in my homemade carrot & red bell pepper soup.
Mmmmm.

Which is strange - because when I was a boy, I refused to touch the things!

Am I remembering something right? Are wood ashes OK on a vegetable garden except the asparagus?

I usually have umpteen seed catalogs by now. I think only one has arrived so far. Anyone getting them yet?

"Anyone getting them yet?"

.

I've gotten Territorial Seed Company - last week.

Or maybe it was just the email. I forget.

I’ve gotten several so far. Territorial, Johnny’s, Jung’s, Maine Potato Lady, St Lawrence, and Southern Exposure, along with a few I can’t think of offhand, but they’re the big mega-companies with high prices and low quality.

Still waiting on the one from Baker Creek.

Oh boy, just had to look at Baker Creek’s website. Now I have 20 tabs open with 14 of them being tomatoes, 2 sunflower and the other 4 peppers.

Harris Seeds catalog, meh, mostly F1 hybrids and their supplies are high priced.

Beautiful Rose! The sidewalk is wet! Not something I think of when I think of California!

(L.J. had a lot of rain up north of you and lost power for a while!)

Me working, both of us working, her working(her preference to homemaker). Didn’t matter. Week to week and broke for 20+ years. Me blue collar and her service industry so it’s not like either of us made big money. Not bad when you're single though.
