Am I remembering something right? Are wood ashes OK on a vegetable garden except the asparagus?

Yes. In moderation. They will make your soil more acidic if you put a lot on the beds.

However, any acid-loving shrubs such as Hydrangea or Dogwood, and fruits such as Blueberries, Blackberries or Raspberries and veggies such as Broccoli, Cauliflower and Eggplant also like an acidic soil.
