As a response to a federal order by the Department of Defense, West Point is starting to remove all Confederate statues and portraits from its campus.
West Point Superintendent Lieutenant General Steve Gilland broke the news and stated “During the holiday break, we will begin a multi-phased process, in accordance with Department of Defense directives, to remove, rename or modify assets and real property at the United States Military Academy and West Point installation that commemorate or memorialize the Confederacy or those who voluntarily served with the Confederacy”.
One of the most notable Confederate portraits that will be removed is General Robert E. Lee’s portrait.
Besides Lee’s portrait, a stone image of him along with several plaques of his likeness will also be removed.
Most people only know Robert E. Lee as the General of the Confederate Army but before choosing to side with the Confederacy he served 32 years in the US military.
Lee started off his military career by being the top graduate at West Point and made a name for himself during the Mexican-American War where at one point he even worked side by side with General Ulysses S. Grant.
After the Mexican American War, Lee was later named as the Superintendent of West Point.
In the years leading up to the Civil War, Lee condemned any states succeeding from the Union and stated they were betraying the Founding Fathers.
Advisor to President Lincoln Union Army General Winfield Scott even requested Robert E. Lee to be the new general of the Union Army.
Lee, however, would deny the opportunity and would eventually resign from the US military in order to join forces with the Confederate Army shortly after Virginia succeeded from the Union.
His reason was he didn’t want to betray his native state of Virginia.
Sad.
General Lee was a great man...it’s disgusting what West point is doing....but I’m not surprised.
More things resulting from the Obama Presidency. I couldn’t believe people like James Woods would say that Trump was wiping away Obama’s Presidency especially if Obamacare would be repealed.
Thanks for the info.
Me too, I am surprised by this to.
Think of the Gunpowder Plot in the UK and Guy Fawkes Day...............
I’ll take it.
Wasn,’t he the Commandant of West Point., and if memory serves me correctly got through 4 years without an single demerit as a cadet.
It should not be difficult to identify at the highest level of the DOD who the "they" is that actually handed down this "removal" order. Most likely it originated at the WH.
An active R conference could easily conduct hearings on the matter and the next time there is a R admin in the WH the matter could be resolved.
Actually that began well before the war. Lee was granted a lengthy leave of absence to execute his FIL’s almost impossibly complex will. At the end of his leave of absence while the terms of returning Arlington Plantation to being a paying proposition before the plantation’s slaves could be manumitted, By Virginia law private manumissions were illegal, a complicated and demanding manumission package had to be moved through the legislature. (Following the Nat Turner insurrection manumission of slaves was no longer a private matter.) A heavy financial responsibility bond had to be executed by the owner to guarantee the freedman would not become a public charge this had to be accompanied by a detailed statement of the good conduct and moral character of each slave to be freed. This is because it was believed that malcontent freedmen had been partially responsible for Nat Turner absorbing some of his radical beliefs. After quashing the John Brown terrorist raid Lee had to return to his command in Texas. He came back to Virginia in March 1861 and resigned his commission. The Va legislature cleared the manumission package of Lee in part as he was now commander of Virginia state forces. The Arlington slaves were freed just as the war began and were given land to settle on that had been part of the plantation. To this day this area known as Arlington Heights is mostly populated with decendents of these freedmen and continue to work for the administration of Arlington Cemetaery and Fi Myer.
Yep. The “War of Northern Aggression”
Pretty sure the average black person had never heard of REL.
Lee broke his West Point oath - He failed to “support the Constitution of The United States” and he attempted to overthrow the Government of the United States.
There is a statue in honor of the service Benedict Arnold gave to the US during the Revolution. Mind you it is his horse with his bot in the stirup.
Not our country anymore.
Boot
“he attempted to overthrow the Government of the United States.”
Not true....the south only wished to withdraw from the goverment of the United States......
So much for reconciliation. Bring on the hatred.
American Taliban strikes again.
Lincoln would be loser number one, since he declared war on his countrymen.
Indeed.
We would seem to have an advantage over 1930's Germany in that regard but the question, of course, is whether our political representatives will respond effectively.
It should not be difficult to formally or informally identify at the highest level of the DOD who the "they" is that actually handed down this "removal" order. Most likely it originated at the WH.
An active R conference could easily conduct hearings on the matter or utilize other means for the identification and the next time there is a R admin in the WH the matter could be appropriately resolved.
Even sooner, the next R presidential candidate could include it in his campaign as a living example of what the Dem party is doing to our nation.
