I live in an early-60's-build house. For the most part, it's wonderful, but it has very little insulation. I've been meaning to rectify that, but didn't yet.

So, after spending a warm night buried under blankets, I wake up to a shivering-cold set of rooms, all under 60 degrees F.... even though me and the missus set all the baseboard heating to max and left both space heaters going.

So, I decide to go to Walmart. I find two pallets of space heaters, one of them Infra-red, and one of them Oil-radiant. Both are electric.

I go ahead and put one of each in my cart, get a few food items, then decide to pick up one more Infra-red heater.... maybe 5 minutes later.

BOTH PALLETS ARE CLEANED OUT... when I get to the register, everyone had a pair of those heaters in their cart.

House set to 70, gas heat. Not quite that warm upstairs, Finished basement very warm, probably need to close some vents, keep door open to let heat rise except when my oldest boys (19 & 21) are gaming online and loud.

Had to drive up to Dayton yesterday, early in the morning, for an important Dr. appointment for my Mom. Averaged 40mph on I-75 in the post blizzard clean up.

When I turn up the heat, the house takes a little while to warm up. Sometimes it takes until late April before it warms up.

LOL! I feel ya.

If I lived in California, buying a Generac would be at the top of my list.

I went out at 1pm and put the truck battery on charge. Let it get a full charge and it still barely cranked and started at 5 degrees temp. Will be shopping for a battery soon.

The little woman and I live in a house without electricity or running water on the family homestead in southern Indiana. Really cold weather means we just bring in a little more firewood and cuddle a little closer. Watching the fire at night is far more interesting than anything on television.

We bottomed out at 5 degrees here in North Georgia. Very few of the houses up here can handle that sort of cold.

Can he shut his water off at the street? It takes a special key to do it, but as long as the turning nut for the valve is in good shape and not frozen, he should be able to do that.

“In northern Colorado, where it was below zero for 40+ hours, I spent most of yesterday either getting or giving jump starts. I have two vehicles, and can usually start one with the other, but yesterday they were both dead. Turn the key and just get clicks. So a bunch of neighbours got together to help get everyoneโ€™s cars started.”

-19 in Longmont. Subaru started but the Ranger wouldn’t. Charged up the battery but just clicks. It’s a tropical 30 degrees right now.

Pictures and video from the interstates here look exactly like Godzilla walked down the middle of the highway tossing semis, cars and trucks all over the place.

Laz
Iโ€™m using a MR Buddy heater and a propane bottle to heat a small sun room 10โ€™ X 20โ€™ along with a dielectric fan it works pretty good the setup doesnโ€™t require power, just propane. Good luck. We got this crap about Thursday 14F below zero with 10 mph wind. This is Idaho weโ€™ve learned to deal with this. The blast moved east and we moderated clear up to 18 above so far.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Sunny and nice in ABQ, NM.

Sorry about the freeze to the east and north of us.

That’s why I love the West. Generally warm, dry, and sunny.

After the great snow/freeze of 2021 with no water or electricity, I took no chances this year. When my power went out Thursday night, I booked a hotel room for 2 nights.

I went and checked on things yesterday. The power was back on, but the water pipes are still frozen. I have all electric heat and the house got no warmer than 60 degrees. That along with no water sent me back to my hotel room.

Itโ€™s supposed to get above freezing this afternoon. Iโ€™m heading back to home. I pray I donโ€™t have a busted water pipe like I did last year.

Merry Freezing Christmas from the Texas Hill Country.
