This morning I'm picking up my brand spanking new Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road edition. It's my first new vehicle in almost 40 years.
While I was married, all the new vehicles went to the now ex-wife because I wanted her to be the safest possible and I was ok driving the 'hand me downs' due to my very short commute.
As we had kids, that continued with her getting the new vehicles with the most safety features for her and our two sons.
I never considered it a "sacrifice" to always drive the highly used vehicles and her & the kids getting the new ones. To me, it's what good husbands & dads do for their wives & kids: protect them as much as possible. Zero regrets there.
It really struck me yesterday that this will be my first new vehicle in almost 40 years. Mine.
I'd been searching for a replacement for the aging 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/140,000 miles on it for almost two years. I had a really hard time finding something I liked driving as much as it.
Alas, the last six months have seen three trips to the Jeep dealer to find an intermittent misfire that occurs in mostly cold weather and at highway speeds. A recall for the fuel pump wiring harness, thought to be the culprit, was done twice. New plugs, wires, checking ignition system and running diagnostics for days on end didn't uncover the problem.
I think I figured it out myself: bad coil pack but am unwilling to replace them all to see if that's really it. The OEM coil packs aren't cheap and while I can do the labor myself, it does have 140k on it. Time for it to go.
Drove a Toyota Highlander and liked it, though it reminds me of a station wagon. Then I saw a nice, lunar rock colored Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road and remembered how much I really like the Tacoma's. Especially that Lunar Rock color.
Drove a Tacoma TRD Off-Road in a silver color with the packages I wanted on it. LOVED IT! Better than I expected and best part: Dealer took me to a construction lot with mud hills, potholes and obstacles to try it out. What an awesome, capable vehicle.
Expected a 3-4 month wait to get one due to the demand for the color I wanted. Received a call yesterday, the one they got in for another customer, the customer turned down because it didn't have the Tonneau Cover included. I was next on the list and jumped on it. Ordered the factory Tonneau cover over the phone and will have that installed when it arrives.
Love my 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee & sorry to see it go, but it's time. Wanted a new Grand Cherokee and have heard/read so many reliability issues with them that I opted for the Toyota, who's #1 in reliability. That's what I want at my advanced age (60 as of two weeks ago.)
Can't wait to pick it up this morning, and the day after Christmas I'm off to Tennessee with it to visit my two sons, who moved there in early November.
Here's a pic of the truck I'm getting this morning including the color & off-road package. My first new vehicle FOR ME, in almost 40 years. Yep, I'm excited:
I think you’re gonna like that one. It’s a solid truck.
Congrats, enjoy.
Congrats! Please get a plate put on to prevent your catalytic converters from getting stolen.
Congratulations! You will love it. I currently have a 2014 Tacoma. No worries at all.
Good-looking truck.
Congrats!
Ooooh.... didn't think about that. Great idea. Wonder if that's something the dealer can order & install for me?
Congrats!
I've heard that exact same statement from at least 4 other Tacoma owners that I / my girlfriend know over the past few days. One has a 2010 with over 125k on it, says all he's ever done is routine maintenance and it's just as good today as it was brand new. Statements like yours make me feel good about the decision I made. Thanks!
This is VERY COOL!!! Man, enjoy it.
+1!
Congrats, brother.
I got a Subaru Ascent last year. I do love this vehicle.
‘Pod.
I’m thinking certain muffler shops. I’m not sure about the dealer. But that model is near the very top of the list for CC thefts.
Congratulations! Having a new car instead of used ones feels great!
P.S. Whether your ex will admit it or not, letting her and the kids have the new car for safety reasons was the right thing. Pretty cool in my book.
Thanks! I liked how it drove, accelerated, handled, etc.. I bought it fully loaded. Leather interior, heated seats, moonroof, power rear window, tow package, remote start, satellite nav & radio, blue tooth, apple car play / android auto, the works. I was just hell-bent on buying what I wanted, fully-loaded and I'd read so many positive reviews of that truck, Toyota's #1 reliability ranking and word of mouth from other Tacoma owners really helped.
She knew, she acknowledged it. It drove her bonkers that I never bought a new car for myself even though we could've easily afforded it.
I've lived my life being very financially frugal: just because you can afford something, doesn't mean you should. That was always my motto, drove her bonkers.
Best part about today: paying cash. Living frugally and below ones means pays off. Financially this doesn't hurt me at all.
I appreciate very much you letting me know that. I'm off work until Jan 3rd and am going to get that taken care of quickly.
Tokyo appreciates your donation.
I like the Subaru Ascent also, wanted something with a higher towing capacity. BTW: I hope you're parking it outside. Are you aware of the fire hazard and recall for that vehicle?
