Dollar Tree is known for its great prices on holiday decorations and party supplies, but as food prices continue to hit budgets hard, shoppers are turning to this discount store to get their groceries.
According to Winsight, Dollar Tree’s same-store sales of consumables outpaced discretionary sales for the second straight quarter, the retailer reported, with a 9.3% comparable in food and beverage, snacks and cookies, and candy.
Same-store sales of food and beverages grew by 4.7% and the chain saw overall same-store sales growth of 4.1%, Winsight noted. The company’s overall same-store sales increased by 8.6%.
“We are increasing our sales outlook for the year. The efforts to evolve the assortment to drive consumables performance at Dollar Tree, combined with initiatives designed to improve the value proposition at Family Dollar, are working,” said Mike Witynski, Dollar Tree President and Chief Executive Officer in a company statement. “We believe we will continue to be part of the solution to millions of households seeking value at a time when they need us most.”
Dollar Tree has made several investments in its food merchandising, said Winsight, and the chain has seen increasing interest in its private label items. Witynski also told analysts that SNAP and food stamp business is growing as shoppers are “shifting into the consumables and needs-based to make their budget happen,” Winsight reported.
Dollar Tree plans to continue its focus on increasing frozen and refrigerated offerings, as well as over-the-counter drug and health items, paper products and food as it looks to expand its owned private-label brands.

I was at my local Dollar Tree, today. Found two really good deals on canned Albacore Tuna and Teriyaki Sauce. It pays to look at ALL the foodstuffs and read labels as to carb count and where it's made.
I don't buy China junk there...or anywhere.
shampoo
deodorant
razors
toothbrushes & floss
never really looked at the food
More important is best by dates
socks
Well, Dollar Tree is now Buck and a Quarter Tree.
“shampoo
deodorant
razors
toothbrushes & floss”
same here. Been shopping at 99c STORE for a decade. There’s a dollar razor 3-pack which i really like that I buy there. I really dont get why people buy $10 bleach at retail when it only costs $1.29 for the same big size at 99C store.
Yeah, I remember the time my Mom brought home some produce from a $1 store. It gave her a massive cockroach infestation in her kitchen. The roaches were hitchhiking on the produce. Had to pay professional exterminators to rid the house of them.
Dollar stores thrive in bad economies, even in high income areas
I don’t really think that any dollar stores are the place to buy any goods. To get all of your products to cost a “dollar”, the size of the product just keeps getting smaller. What used to be a dollar for a 12 ounce product, is now a 8 ounce container. You pay more for less product.
Dollar stores of any kind, are usually expensive compared to larger supermarkets. The trade off is usually locality.
ny store too...
i think dish soap is down to 6 oz
I found places to purchase beans, rice, and dried vegetables in bulk. Now for some yummy SPAM.
My DOLLAR Tree store has the Best bread Ever! 5.69 loaves for 1.25 ....and entemanns stuff same price value.
Difference after City Market or Safeway style discounts?
Negligible, and goes negative as soon as you have to drive more because DG didn’t have everything.
Family Dollar, and the .99 cent stores are now pricing over Walmart prices. Screw them, they are taking advantage of the situation and price gouging.
And here is why... They bid on inferior or bad or almost going bad product by expiration date, or because of off sized product for a normal standard for produce and such. Goods from truck wrecks and such. The stuff other retailers just will not buy.
There is absolutely no reason why what they offer should be higher than Walmart who offers the better dated better produce for less that Walmart.
So except for a couple items, Walmart is actually cheaper over all. Especially for canned goods and fresh produce you would like to have a better shelf life.
Gimmicks and scams, starting with the name of the store...
How bad will it have to get for the Independents and “youths” to stop voting for the left?
I prefer Dollar General, but they closed the one down the road due to excessive theft.
Yes
Thanks Brandon!
Dollar Tree and $.99 cent are a waste of time.
The produce is horrible and at $1.49 for a apple size of cauliflower and $1.79 for similar broccoli both of which were in very sad state, are no bargain.
further, the eggs, meats and sandwish slices are the same price as Walmart, Grocery Outlet, etc.
Canned goods are also over $1 but, can still be had for under a dollar at Walmart, Grocery Outlet, etc.
