The World Health Organization announced on Monday that it is renaming monkeypox as mpox due to concerns that the original name could be perceived as racist or stigmatizing.
Driving the news: Both the monkeypox and mpox names will be used by WHO over the next year as the term "monkeypox" is gradually phased out, WHO said in a press release.
"When the outbreak of monkeypox expanded earlier this year, racist and stigmatizing language online, in other settings and in some communities was observed and reported to WHO," the press release stated. WHO began consulting with experts about potentially renaming the disease back in August, per AP. The big picture: While Monkeypox cases are more often found in Central and Western African countries, a monkeypox outbreak occurred in Europe and the U.S. in May this year.
The WHO declared monkeypox a global emergency in July, after the disease was detected in more than 70 countries. Last month WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said monkeypox had seen "a promising decline globally. The number of reported cases has dropped for eight straight weeks. This is very encouraging."
A-pox and U-pox, definitely out...........
Because any mention of monkeys, even in the context of involvement of actual monkeys, is a racist dog whistle.
So what happens now? Will the zoos rename the monkey cages to m-cages? Is “monkey” now a forbidden word, so that if you appear to be saying the word in any video you will be fired from your job, have your scholarship canceled, and be accused of a hate crime?
How far can this insanity go?
Don’t monkey around with that thought...................
That makes it all better.
This is indistinguishable from a Babylon Bee article.
Those great folks at Babylon Bee can’t compete with reality!................
To really be antiracist they should rename it “honkeypox”.
Did monkeys complain to the WHO?
racist, homophobic, mysogynistic, and anti-semetic.
There, covered all bases. But, the same is true of all words..
“Because ‘monkey’ is racist...this sh*t never stops”
As a side note Siddhartha Gautama’s (Buddha) commentary on crazed humans was captured by two words “monkey brained.”
The WHO can change the name of the [disease] but they cannot change the name of the [virus].
That’s under the jurisdiction of a totally different organization, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses: ICTV.
ICTV has NOT removed the Monkey part, and they probably WILL NOT.
