Sugar substitutes found in many supermarket foods have been shown to kill off antibiotic-resistant bacteria that cause pneumonia and sepsis. Three artificial sweeteners used in products such as diet drinks, yogurts and desserts dramatically halt the growth of multidrug-resistant priority pathogens, but they also reduce the bacteria's resistance to commonly used antibiotics, meaning fewer are needed.
This discovery could lead the fight against superbugs.
"Artificial sweeteners are present in all diet and sugar-free foods," said Dr. Ronan McCarthy. "We discovered that these same sweeteners that you have with your coffee or in your 'sugar-free' soda could kill very dangerous bacteria and make them easier to treat. This is very exciting because normally it takes billions of dollars and decades to develop a new antibiotic drug, whereas we found a compound which can not only fight the pathogenic bacteria but also reverse its resistance to already existing antibiotics."
The researchers found that the sweeteners saccharin, cyclamate and acesulfame-K (called Ace-K) curb the two "priority pathogens" the World Health Organization says most urgently need new antibiotic treatments.
Used in yogurts, diet drinks and desserts, Ace-K can completely stop the growth of both priority pathogens Acinetobacter baumannii and aeruginosa. The two are super dangerous for people who are critically ill or have compromised immune systems, such as chemotherapy patients.
Homing in on the 200-times-sweeter-than-sugar Ace-K, the team found that it stops pathogens forming protective biofilms, which would usually help them stick around and cause chronic infections and develop antibiotic resistance. When used with antibiotics, Ace-K increased their killing power, meaning lower doses of antibiotics may be needed to treat a patient.

If you are wondering what cyclamate is, it’s a tasty sugar substitute available in Canada, but not here.
That’s okay, because acesulfame-K is available here, and was best against Acinetobacter baumannii and aeruginosa bacteria.
So, you choose between cancer or bacteria... Hmm..
Count me skeptical.
I’m not.
What it also seems to tell us though, is that the ersatz sugars are presumably deadly to healthy gut biomes, too. Certain types of bacteria are required for vitamin K absorption, for example.
Doctor: Get me the antibiotics, diet coke, diet pepsi, diet You Hoo.
So,I should have been pouring the diet sodas on my leg instead of drinking them.🙄
Do they kill you too?
This prompted me to see what kind of sweetener Splenda is that I use in my cup of coffee every morning. But before I get to the Acey-K, saccharine, cyclamate stuff I see - Splenda has been known to significantly reduce GUT FLORA.....so now I’m off on a WTF is Gut Flora..... and gut microbes etc.... yeah, I get it....the good, the bad and the ugly.
It just ticks me off that the FDA and everybody and their buddy will regulate, control and expound endlessly on things like this but won’t tell you anything truthful about their ‘VAXXINE’....
It’s saccharin still a thing? I thought it was banned in the 70s and replaced with 80s artificial sweeteners such as NutriSweet, Sweet n Low and Splenda
So...these artificial sweeteners kill living organisms?
Hmmmm...
This is my side eye.
Yes.
If you are an actual gaffer, you'd better learn up on it asap. The guts are the primary arena of your immune system and when they fall apart, everything falls apart.
That’s very good news.
That’s what I think.
Between this and the fake meat.
“Better living through chemicals” crap.
Saccharin has a colorful history. In 2010 saccharin was declared ok by the EPA, after claims of carcinogenic issues over many years. Other than the health concerns decades ago, saccharin has a bitter aftertaste which many find unpleasant for a sweetener.
The government and media still want to kill us with garbage.
I wonder what else they may kill.
