Weight loss is never an easy nut to crack, but a handful of almonds could keep extra kilos at bay according to research.
Examining how almonds can affect appetite, researchers found that a snack of 30–50 grams of almonds could help people cut back on the number of kilojoules they consume each day.
The study found that people who consumed almonds—as opposed to an energy-equivalent carbohydrate snack—lowered their energy intake by 300 kilojoules (most of which came from junk food) at the subsequent meal.
Dr. Sharayah Carter says the research provides valuable insights for weight management.
"Rates of overweight and obesity are a major public health concern and modulating appetite through better hormonal response may be key to promoting weight management," Dr. Carter says.
"Our research examined the hormones that regulate appetite, and how nuts—specifically almonds—might contribute to appetite control."
"We found that people who ate almonds experienced changes in their appetite-regulating hormones, and that these may have contributed to reduced food intake (by 300kJ)."
In Australia, two in three (12.5 million) adults are overweight or obese. Globally, nine billion adults are overweight with 650 million of these being obese.
The study found that people who ate almonds had 47% lower C-peptide responses (which can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease); and higher levels of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (18% higher), glucagon (39% higher), and pancreatic polypeptide responses (44% higher). Glucagon sends satiety signals to the brain, while pancreatic polypeptide slows digestion which may reduce food intake, both encouraging weight loss.
"Almonds are high in protein, fiber, and unsaturated fatty acids, which may contribute to their satiating properties and help explain why fewer kilojoules were consumed."
Dr. Carter says this may have clinical effects in the long term.

Which nut loves the game of chess? A Chess-nut
Have you tried almond milk? It’s unlike any udder milk
23-25 almonds are close to an ounce.
Covering a 3 X 3 inch sticky note sheet requires 25 almonds.
Impressive . . . over 100% of world population is overweight. . . .
Great catch... I love that type of mis-statement.
Anyway, 300 KJ is about 70 (kilo)”calories” in US English. That, to me, is not as significant as the article is attempting to say.
.
Being a type 2 diabetic, I can vouch for almonds as being a good staple
food for blood sugar control. Them and oatmeal -
old-fashioned rolled oats - not the sugary instant crap.
In the past I have gone a few days just eating those two items -
with no ill-affects and stable blood sugar readings.
I love almonds. I also love cashews but I know almonds are much healthier so I try to stick with them. But I slip.

snack of 30–50 grams of almonds
30 grams = 1.05 oz
50 grams = 1.76 oz
Summary of dumbass research:
Not all fats are bad for you, fat-free is unhealthy.
I like almonds.
Does anybody know how many almonds are in 50-60 grams?
Splendid!
A “snack” of ~40 almonds is a nice handful, very satisfying.
I know that they are a very good alternative to junk food.
I guess most nuts are.
But boy, do they ever mess with the stomach.
What is wrong with cashews? I prefer them over almonds
Lots of fat and oil in cashews. But I love them. Only the whole cashews though. Bits and pieces suck.
Thanks!

My private duty RN/aka wife, has this fresh fruit and mixed nut countertop for snacking/grazing.
Almonds make up about 70-80% of her nut mix bowl.
I was headed to Type 2 diabetes with the B$ of/re eating a lot of carbs to now eating basically zero starch based carbs. I have no lab problems now.
We have real meat/protein 3 times a day, starting with smoked Alaska Salmon, to some form of turkey or chicken sandwiches or plain for lunch. Dinner includes veggies, a green salad and 4-8 oz of real protein (fish, fowl, beef, lamb). We have basically 3 sit down meals per day. Snacks from her countertop are whenever we want a snack.
My various lab values are now in the normal range for several years. That is not bad for an 84 year old guy.
My wife describes our dietary life as basically the Mediterranean diet with about 8-10 ounces of wine each evening or a semi Keto eating guide not a diet. Fresh veggies and fruit are served at each meal or on her counter top.
Plenty of individuals, naming no names (cough*Michael Moore*cough), probably count as several people each based on tonnage.
“nine billion adults are overweight”
Sharayah Carter et al must go to the same school as the people who conduct our elections!
Thanks! More almonds it is then!
(They will complain about the water they use you know...)
