A research team led by the University of Houston has developed a vaccine targeting the dangerous synthetic opioid fentanyl that could block its ability to enter the brain, thus eliminating the drug’s “high.”
The breakthrough discovery could have major implications for the nation’s opioid epidemic by becoming a relapse prevention agent for people trying to quit using opioids. While research reveals Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is treatable, an estimated 80% of those dependent on the drug suffer a relapse.
The findings, published in the journal Pharmaceutics, could not be timelier or more in demand: Over 150 people die every day from overdoses of synthetic opioids including fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Consumption of about 2 milligrams of fentanyl (the size of two grains of rice) is likely to be fatal depending on a person’s size.
In another positive finding, the vaccine did not cause any adverse side effects in the immunized rats involved in lab studies. The team plans to start manufacturing clinical-grade vaccine in the coming months with clinical trials in humans planned soon.
“The anti-fentanyl antibodies were specific to fentanyl and a fentanyl derivative and did not cross-react with other opioids, such as morphine. That means a vaccinated person would still be able to be treated for pain relief with other opioids,” said Haile.

Vaccine is a word which now means: “stuff we want you to take”.
Sure — an addict is going to want a vaccine so he doesn’t get high.
Sure I would trust them completely to come up with a safe option . Just like they did for Covid 19.
This sounds a lot like modern pharma where they prescribe a new drug to counter the effects of the drug they have been prescribing.
A simpler solution would be to stop the flow of fentanyl.
How about if you get a shot of narcan for an overdose, the EMT gives you the fentanyl ‘vaccine’ right afterward?
Not going to make much difference. We have had disulfiram for alcoholics for decades now and we still have drunks killing themselves and others with abandon.
Sounds great, until you actually need pain medication.
They claim you can still get relief from morphine.
Fentanyl vax? Back to licking toads.

Totally useless. People that want to take these drugs are going to.
They aren’t interested in some ridiculous vaccine.
Vaccine implies protection from an unwanted invasion to the host.
This is clearly not the case.
Utterly stupid
Too bad it is fentanyl-specific and doesn’t block urges for other opioids.
I’m smoking banana peels again…

They quoted this person in the article. I don’t know if they are right or not.

No thanks. Fentanyl is the most potent pain killer we have when used properly.
The dopeheads that take stuff they don’t know.... let them off themselves. Good riddance
Fair enough. My brother-in-law was in the hospital a little while back... heart attack. Painful. They asked him “do you want fentanyl for the pain?” - just hearing the word nearly gave him another heart attack. Needless to say he isn’t a candidate for that vaccine.
No,no,no. Sources for the heroin . . not the quote. Sheesh. I picked a bad day to give up sniffing glue.
