Sedentary lifestyle and sugary diet more detrimental to men, study finds
Medical Xpress / University of Missouri / Endocrinology ^ | Oct. 27, 2022 | James A Smith et al

A new study is the first evidence in humans that short-term lifestyle changes can disrupt the response to insulin of blood vessels. It's also the first study to show men and women react differently to these changes.

Vascular insulin resistance is a feature of obesity and type 2 diabetes that contributes to vascular disease. Researchers examined vascular insulin resistance in 36 young and healthy men and women by exposing them to 10 days of reduced physical activity, cutting their step count from 10,000 to 5,000 steps per day. The participants also increased their sugary beverage intake to six cans of soda per day.

"We know that incidence of insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease is lower in premenopausal women compared to men, but we wanted to see how men and women reacted to reduced physical activity and increased sugar in their diet over a short period of time," said Camila Manrique-Acevedo, MD, associate professor of medicine.

The results showed that only in men did the sedentary lifestyle and high sugar intake cause decreased insulin-stimulated leg blood flow and a drop in a protein called adropin, which regulates insulin sensitivity and is an important biomarker for cardiovascular disease.

"These findings underscore a sex-related difference in the development of vascular insulin resistance induced by adopting a lifestyle high in sugar and low on exercise," said Manrique-Acevedo.

For some reason, insulin resistance is worse with us men.

Please stay on top of it.

Don’t get fat. If you are already fat, a good time to start losing it is now. No matter what anyone tells you, it will require eating less. Skip a meal or two, even three. You will not die from it.

Number 1 cause of insulin resistance is visceral fat , which is indirectly the result of a sedentary lifestyle.

Cut down on visceral fat and watch your insulin sensitivity improve.

Diet *and* exercise are essential for weight loss. And the exercise also helps one’s mental state.

True. But, without an energy deficit, there cannot be fat loss. Exercise doesn’t burn enough calories to be an efficient way to create that energy deficit. The best thing about exercise for weight loss is that it is difficult to eat while doing it.

That is a huge step. Not only does it lead to weight loss, it stops a lot of inflammation.

Yes it does. I'm down about 15 lbs by simply curtailing sugar.

Milk is a big violator....and I love milk.

Stay the course. Eat fats and proteins. You won’t be hungry all day. Milk is a tough one, for sure. More fat usually means less carbs.

You don’t have to be as fit as an MMA fighter to live better. Just a couple thousand steps walking or a hundred reps with light weights.

I lost weight...gave all my 36 inch waist trousers to goodwill...now into a 33 inch waist trouser.

Reason is I got all my jeans grubby from working on the truck and gardening....only clean pair of jeans in the house belonged to spouse...fitted OK.

Found a couple of pairs of 33 inch waist at Walmart.
