New study finds no relationship between high intake of refined grain foods and risk of cardiovascular disease
Medical Xpress / Grain Foods Foundation / Trends in Cardiovascular Medicine ^ | Oct. 19, 2022 | Glenn A. Gaesser

A study reveals that consuming high intakes of refined grain foods does not increase one's risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, or stroke. Although refined grains are included as a component of the Western dietary pattern, the results of the meta-analyses suggest that refined grains do not contribute to the higher CVD risk associated with this unhealthy dietary pattern.

The study demonstrated the lack of association between refined grain intake and CVD risk in meta-analyses of 17 prospective studies (including 877,462 participants) that restricted analyses to only staple grain foods (e.g., bread, cereal, pasta, white rice), as well as for meta-analyses of studies that included both staple and indulgent grain foods (e.g., cakes, cookies, doughnuts, brownies, muffins, pastries).

"These new results call into question the widely held view that refined grain foods are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease," said Dr. Glenn Gaesser.

"Refined grains are typically included in the Western dietary pattern that also includes red and processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, French fries, and high fat dairy products. Research shows these foods, especially red and processed meat, and sugar-sweetened beverages, that are the real culprits in this dietary pattern. Meta-analyses in the new study indicate that the higher CVD risk associated with this dietary pattern is not from refined grain foods."

Refined grains are grains that have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ to extend the grain's shelf life. This process removes some of the original fiber and B vitamins from the food, but they are often enriched with additional B vitamins and iron.

This study follows a recent commentary from Gaesser published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings that examined data from existing published studies to reveal no link between type 2 diabetes and consumption of refined grains.

Keep it low Glycemic Index/Load and I can see this.

However, refined grains normally have a lot of surface area, meaning they are quickly made into sugar, even from saliva while in our mouths, as with refined breads.

Wonder how much the big junk food manufacturers paid the CDC for the “proper” outcome of this study.

Even government pushes the healthy whole grain diet. That’s why obesity is at a record high. Safe and effective.

Take off your blinders and notice the preponderance of glucose-raising products in the grocery store. Like we’re all in a movie about a whole population addicted. Makes you want to grab people and wake em up.

As usual, “the science” of biology is only very rarely “settled”.

Only thing for sure is there are only 2 sexes in humans and we cannot change.

“Research shows these foods, especially red and processed meat...”

HORSEPUCKY!

The problems with these metastudies is they are almost always totally bogus. They mix studies with different methods and definitions, then statistically manipulate the data. As a result, it is the statistical manipulation that controls the outcome. And how they manipulate it depends on their preconceived notions.

And in modern nutrition “science”, veganism funded by Coca-Cola dominates.

“Grain foods are one of the major food groups as part of an overall healthy eating plan. When you think about a meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you should aim to have about one-quarter of that meal coming from grain foods to benefit include their essential nutrients – dietary fiber, B vitamins (folate, thiamin, niacin), iron, zinc, magnesium and calcium.”

“The lack of association between intake of refined grain and T2D is surprising, considering the foods defined as refined grains. In addition to staple refined grain foods mentioned here, refined grains were defined to include cakes,14,17,20 cookies,20 sweets and desserts,14,15 sweet rolls and bread,14,17,19,20 pancakes,14,15,17,20 waffles,14,15,17 muffins,14,17 and pizza.14,15,17 These foods typically contain high amounts of sugar and fat and low amounts of fiber.”

Yeah. Cakes, cookies, sweets and desserts, sweet rolls and bread, pancakes, waffles, muffins? No effect on getting diabetes. But RED MEAT? EVIL!

I think it’s pretty well established that the fiber in whole grains is helpful in terms of cardio-vascular health. To find that refined flour doesn’t increase the risk is surprising.
