All part of the plan. Keep low, and middle, income folks close to home. Gas will get too expensive for the average American to travel except to and from work (car-pools) and the grocery. Electric cars will prevent distant travel.

That nightmare actually happened recently on I-95.
It was a cold winter day and a bad accident had caused a close down of southbound traffic.
Many Electric cars ran out of battery trying to keep warm.
Those people were observed walking on highway shoulder begging truck drivers to let them in to warm up.
Which means no more J-6 events!
The interstate will become very dangerous with stalled EV’s littering the driving lanes. Instead of picking up litter, local non-profits can start “push that thing off the road” gangs and sponsor 2 miles of the highway. Good exercise.
Defrosters, heaters, lights, and .. reduce the range even faster.

In a conventional gas powered car, the heat produced is just “waste” that’s there anyway. So you can always use it to heat the cabin or defrost the windows without affecting milage. And at least in the Northeast, you need heat way more often than A/C.

I picked up the extra warranties, supposedly 125,000 bumper-to-bumper, including battery. Time will tell if that is fully honored.
EVs make sense in China, where they have lots more coal than petroleum. So they burn coal to fuel their EVs. Hydro, wind, solar also fuel them.
Our situation is, that we have lots of oil here to make gasoline and diesel. To fuel our ICE automobiles and trucks. So EVs are only legit as second cars in a household. ICE vehicles must always come first and dominate.
My bet is, there is no FReeper who has only an EV for transportation.
I can “charge” my car in less than five minutes and get around 400 miles...
I live in the middle of nowhere. Ain’t no one around here....going to buy an electric car/truck. Ain’t gonna happen....
You forgot the word “staged”.
I picked up a hybrid at the end of February, great solution. If I drive EV-style, I get over 60 MPG, worst I’ve seen is still around 52 MPG. I have mix of hills with 6% grades, city, and highway. And I can stop at any gas station to refuel.

I think it’s amusing that these constant stories about how awful it is to travel across country in EVs are never about Teslas. The Tesla supercharger network is a big part of their success. They are fast and work about 98% of the time. A Model Y takes 22 minutes to charge from 20% to 80% at a Tesla supercharger. Other charger networks like Electrify America are far fewer, much slower and don’t work about 30% of the time.
And in these high rise apartment buildings with thousands of people, who have cars...
