Wyoming Electric Vehicle Road Trip Nightmare: Man Spends 15 Hours to Travel 178 Miles Across State
The Western Journal. ^ | October 17, 2022 | Warner Todd Huston

how bad electric vehicles are for long-distance travel .. it took him 15 hellish hours to drive from Cheyenne to Casper, Wyoming.

...

California told EV users not to charge their cars during its repeated summer blackouts.

...

runs out of juice .. forced to pay .. a tow truck to get him to the nearest charging station.

Secondly, since there are three types of charging stations all of which charge at different speeds.. sometimes he would be forced to sit overnight, only to end up with enough battery power to drive a mere 40 miles.

...

Level 3 chargers, for instance, can give a full charge in around three to four hours. But charging on a home-based, level 1 charger can entail a two or three day wait for a full charge.

...

hilly roads sapped his power faster than level roads, so going through hilly territory could cut his battery life by as much as half.

EVs also carry massive costs long-term that the auto industry is desperate to keep customers from learning.

Then there is the serious mental aspect about driving an EV. The phenomenon is called “range anxiety,” as drivers find themselves in anguish over whether or not they will make it to the next charging station before their EV conks out.

...

O’Hashi is not the first person to run up against the uselessness of EVs for long hauls. Another man found that driving his electric Hyundai across Montana was a nightmare. In some cases, charging for 10 hours only brought his battery to a 20 percent charge, which only allows a few miles of driving. Then there is the case of the man who discovered that his electric truck was not suited for towing despite what the manufacturers said.

Tesla can charge 25 miles per hour with a 30 amps 240V dryer plug at home. That’s 200 miles in 8 hours.

This thread isn't about Tesla. It's about one of the other golf cart makers.

All part of the plan. Keep low, and middle, income folks close to home. Gas will get too expensive for the average American to travel except to and from work (car-pools) and the grocery. Electric cars will prevent distant travel.

They’ll have to start towing horse trailers.

When the battery dies just unload the horses and hitch ‘em up to the EV.

ROFL. Now, if they could make a hybrid that runs on electricity and road apples, that would be revolutionary, the EV equivalent of a perpetual motion machine.

That nightmare actually happened recently on I-95.
It was a cold winter day and a bad accident had caused a close down of southbound traffic.
Many Electric cars ran out of battery trying to keep warm.
Those people were observed walking on highway shoulder begging truck drivers to let them in to warm up.

The interstate will become very dangerous with stalled EV’s littering the driving lanes. Instead of picking up litter, local non-profits can start “push that thing off the road” gangs and sponsor 2 miles of the highway. Good exercise.

Defrosters, heaters, lights, and .. reduce the range even faster.

In a conventional gas powered car, the heat produced is just “waste” that’s there anyway. So you can always use it to heat the cabin or defrost the windows without affecting milage. And at least in the Northeast, you need heat way more often than A/C.

I picked up a hybrid at the end of February, great solution. If I drive EV-style, I get over 60 MPG, worst I've seen is still around 52 MPG. I have mix of hills with 6% grades, city, and highway. And I can stop at any gas station to refuel.

2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE.

Pros: Cheap to drive

Cons: Small, noisy on roads

I picked up the extra warranties, supposedly 125,000 bumper-to-bumper, including battery. Time will tell if that is fully honored.

EVs make sense in China, where they have lots more coal than petroleum. So they burn coal to fuel their EVs. Hydro, wind, solar also fuel them.

Our situation is, that we have lots of oil here to make gasoline and diesel. To fuel our ICE automobiles and trucks. So EVs are only legit as second cars in a household. ICE vehicles must always come first and dominate.

My bet is, there is no FReeper who has only an EV for transportation.

2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Battery
Your 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid battery will ordinarily last between 3 to 5 years, but that can vary laboriously depending on battery size, weather conditions type of battery, and driving habits. Even still, just because your battery isn’t entirely dead, doesn’t mean it’s operating accurately

******What is the range on battery only? If you had no gasoline in your tank. 70 miles?

I think it’s amusing that these constant stories about how awful it is to travel across country in EVs are never about Teslas. The Tesla supercharger network is a big part of their success. They are fast and work about 98% of the time. A Model Y takes 22 minutes to charge from 20% to 80% at a Tesla supercharger. Other charger networks like Electrify America are far fewer, much slower and don’t work about 30% of the time.
